engine knock or lifters

A couple months ago I took my 94 aero in to have them install a water pump after I got it back I noticed a slight knock. I asked the mecanic about it and he said he heard a lifter. Well scince then the knock has gotten worse. I started to think it was a rod or something. I went ahead and did that seafoam thing to my engine and the knock stopped. But then after driving it tonight the knock was back. my queston is if this was a rod or bearing wouldn't it always make noise

A lifter tick is constant, a rod bearing is speed sensitive, a main bearing is load sensitive.

Bad rod bearing may cause serious damadge! Rod may crack and damadge krankshaft and block! So if you think it is bearing, remove oil pan and check all the rods....

Hi 94d:

Does the knock happen at idle or only when you try to accelerate?

I have 2 Aeros with the 4.0 engines and both had knocks in the engines. One of them, my wife 90 we replaced the engine and was told that the knock was a broken valve guide, the other one sounds the same but it has never been fixed, it died of other causes.

Strange, that this knock would appear after water pump work and then be intermittent in nature. I would suggest taking off the serpentine belt and then start the van for a brief interval to see if the knock is related to any belt driven component. If it still knocks, then it is likely an internal engine problem. Also, while the belt is off, grab ahold of the fan clutch and see if there is any appreciable slop in either the fan clutch mounting or the pump shaft. Try to move it both up and down and fore and aft.

Hey guys

I seem to remember someone talking about there being a Clockwise & a Counter-Clockwise waterpump for these Aerostars.

If so I wonder if the Mechanic put the wrong pump on.

I think I have that figured out. The pumps on the engines using the serpentine belt turn counter clockwise (reverse direction), and they have a right-handed (normal) thread on the clutch nut. The pumps on the engines using multiple v-belts turn clockwise (normal direction), and they have a left-handed (reverse) thread on the clutch nut. If you put the wrong pump on, the clutch nut will not thread onto the pump.

thanx for the replies.. I will take the belt off and see if that does anything. Is it really that easy to take the pan off from underneath the van??

So what you are saying is: The fins inside the pump are different.
One was made to pump turning Clockwise
and one was made to pump turning Counter-Clockwise.

If so then that is what I was trying to say.

This is an AWD will that make it harder to get the pan off?? Also I was wondering if this noise could be a timing chain??

To remove oil pan is easy... but difficult to take it back carefully to install gasket well without leaks... Be accurate... ore engine will leak more oil then can birn... and you'll have to replace gasket. Use RTV to awoid leaking.
