I like it but it's a matter of opinion. Some people like it in front of the rear tires and others like it out the back. I put the exhaust on my 48 F-3 in front of the rear tires and like it there. The sound varies a lot depending on where you teminate your exhaust pipes. I am running one stock muffler and one turbo and it's plenty loud enough for me...and legal in my state. My exhaust run out the back with the same mufflers would be a lot quieter.

Well, Moms can sometimes be hard to deal with but we do our best. About the only excuse I can think of for exiting the exhaust in front of the rear tires is that it would be less expensive. It stands to reason that less pipe means less routing and less materials and therefore less cost. Turbos are less restrictive than stock mufflers so you might see a small HP gain or possibly even better mileage too. Maybe that will convince her. Good luck with Mom, and if you cant convince her to see it your way just keep the stockers and put the tail pipes out the back.

Vern makes a great point, if you're as broke as the rest of us, having the exhaust stop before the rear axle is the way to go. When I got estimates to have duals put on my 49 the cheapest price I got was $350.

I ended up making my own. Basically a straight shot from the exhaust manifolds through some shorty mufflers and some turn downs right in front of the rear axle. The truck has a good throaty sound and only a small bit of the low end resonance. I figure it won't be so bad once I get the bed floor in and some insulation in the cab.

Good luck convincing Mom

Getting the tailpipes over the rear axle, around the spare tire, and out the rear, while missing the brake hose and fuel lines, is the most expensive part of the system.

Do you know why Mom objects?

My first thought was she knows that side pipes are always louder and doesn't want to wake the neighbors every morning you take off, or be known as the mother of the neighborhood hotrodder.

If her objection is aesthetic...what? What do Moms know about how cool hot rods should look?

Maybe it is the cost thing, but I doubt it.

You need to ask her why she doesn't like the idea. Then we can help with the comeback. After all.....we all have experience talking the "Old Lady" into stuff..

One thing to consider is the early-morning spit trail. Is there a car parked next to you? I put my exhaust out the back because I did not want the water condensation from the truck spitting out the side while it's warming up in the morning. This would have been a mess on my Fairlane's WWW Jag

Joe,
I didn't bring my exhaust out of the side of the truck, so there's no worry about leaving a big carbon stripe down the car next to you. I put a couple of turn downs and terminated them right in front of the differential. Everything is nice and hidden.

Just start snowballing Mom, factory exhaust is so restrictive, truck will be way more efficient if it can breathe properly, get better fuel mileage, etc. Plus, dual exhaust out the back is pretty danged expensive, this way you are saving several hundred dollars, etc, etc, etc

Noisy?? what do you mean Mom? huh? I never thought about that, no it won't make it any louder.........no really, all the guys on the FTE site said it was one of the best things I could do for my truck....

Go get 'er, we're pulling for ya
