Hello,
I have just purchased a 61 F100 with a 223-six and a 3spd still on the column. All the way home (about a 3 hr trip, Louisville to Nashville) I kept thinking about how I was going to have to do something about the gearing of the truck. Then, as i was entering the Nashville area, I lost oil pressure and was just able to limp it in for a landing in my driveway. I have a complete, running 272 Y-block out of a 56 truck and a manual 3spd OD out of a 54 truck in my garage left over from other projects. My questions are:
Is the 272 swap going to be an easy one?
What mods do I have to consider? Will the motor mounts for the 272 fit with the existing cross members, or will some fab work have to be done?
Will the bell housing from the 272 fit the 3spd OD tranny?
Are the input shaft length and splines correct for the 272?
Any input from your knowledge and/or experience is greatly appreciated.
Jeff since the 272 and 3/OD are both out see if they fit together. The motor mounts will be at the front of the motor and the bottom sides of the bell housing. They should be the same making it a bolt in swap. If I'm wrong somebody will correct me but I'm pretty sure I'm giving you good information.
Yes the 272 will bolt to the crossmembers just like the 223. However the front mounting fixture is different between the inline 6's and the v-8's. As for the tranny, not a clue.
Only if it mates up to the 272 flywheel. You can check that at the same time as tranny fitment. Once installed extend it manually to see if it will engage without tearing up the flywheel.
As long as you didn't loose all of the oil, I wouldn't get overly concerned just yet. If the engine ran dry it would lock up. They make noise anyway but run dry the bearings would be raising cain. IMHO
I will check the flywheel and starter as you suggested.
It did burn and leak A LOT of oil. I put about 3 qts in when I got home. I am not worried about it, though. It has helped me to move up the time table on the v8 swap.
if the overdrive is a 54 it will have a 6volt solenoid, that will be a problem, and you'll need to shorten the driveshaft and alot of misc things like fuel lines, wiring, exhaust, and radiator to make the swap
