I have been chasing down a P0344 for about 2 months. it appeared after a "reputable" diesel shop found a P0340 and replace the cps to the tune of 600.00 including oil change. Since then # 6 has been failing CCT and its rotational velocity change has been > 5% and the truck has just been generally running like Doo-Doo. So this AM i decided to put my spare (sealed factory package) in just to check and guess what. 5 consecutive CCT's passed with oil temps from 100 to 200 degrees some before a drive some after the drive and rotational change is > 0.6% on all cylinders. What i did notice was that my spare had 2 small etched circles on the face that points to the cam. The one I took out had a smooth face with no markings which leads me to believe that it is an aftermarket copy.
Just wanted to let everyone know in case they are having CPS'ish problems and cant find an answer. I followed the Service manual line for line and could not find an intermittant short so I replaced every harness under the hood (I am now intimately familar with every connector between the PCM and Passenger side headlight)
Wow 600 bucks for a little troubleshooting and 10 minute cps swap. I'm in the wrong line of work! Glad to hear you got sorted out though. I had the same experience with my original cps. I know it came from an "aftermarket chain" , saw the reciept. Changed it out with one from IH problem solved.
