A short time ago I purchased a 66 f100, after looking around and doing some research I see that I have a 64 grille and front assembly.
I looked at a 66 custom cab yesterday(parts truck)- and the dash was completely different, is that part of the custom cab option?
How many numbers or other clues can I look for on my truck so I will know what I have, and where do I look for them?
I am hoping there is enough original for restoration, it is in graet mechanical shape, and the parts truck I can pick up cheap has an interesting drive train- maybe a faster toy later.
I appreciate your help, Thanks, OwenB
One thing you can do is look for the vin # stamped on the frame rail. It's on the passenger side close to the fire wall. If it doesn't match the cab vin chances are some one changed the body. Hope this helps some.
Owen, Does your truck have a straight front axle or the twin I-beams.
Mark, I think you will have a lor more success looking for the VIN between the axle and radiator support.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
The Custom Cab had the "rectangle" plastic instrument cluster. Some had 2 optional gauges to either side of the instrument cluster. The standard cab could have had a big round instrument instead. 64 models had different front suspensions (straight axle, different inner fender wells and core support, as well as the grill and optional exterior side chrome and other parts. If your door tag does not match your title, consider the thought that maybe someone swapped doors at one time and did not think of swapping the ID tags too. All these 61-66 trucks are worth fixing, no matter what combination you have...
I found mine VIN # stamped on the frame rail next to the fire wall. Besides the only post 64 I owned was a 69. And back them all I cared about was smoking the tires.
Thanks guys, as soon as the rain lets up I will get a better look but I Think I saw Twin I-beams instead of a solid axle.
My next question is about the grill and front (clip?), are the body lines the same? Can I replace these with 66, and get the turn signals and grill original, without changing the hood or quarter-panels?
There is not much fixing to do with this truck, so I can spend some time and money on getting it back to original.
The core support for the 64 is different from the 66. The 65-66 inner fenders are squared off where as the 64 and earlier are rounded. You can change the grill and upper panel to a 66 as they are interchangeable between 61-66.
