I'm having a problem with the air conditioner in my 99 Expedition, it's an Eddie Baeur and so has that automatic climate control "feature". A while ago my AC just stopped working for no reason and I checked the usual suspects and then read something in my Chilton's Manual about resetting the ETC (whatever it's called) by holding the floor and off buttons and then hitting the automatic button. The LCD does a little dance and then displays any error codes. I did this and the AC worked again! Then a couple of days later I had to do it again. And it became more frequent. Then I noticed that if I floored (the gas) the AC would cut off and not come back on. And now the AC won't work unless I'm stopped, do the reset and then it only work as long as I don't hit the gas much. Also it should be noted my check engine light is on I'm thinking for my oxygen sensors. But I've been really busy (in the Navy doing workups for a deployment). But it's hot as a hell and I may be getting a couple of days off here so would love to fix it. Thanks for any insight or help!
Are you getting any error codes when you run the EACT self test? See if the A/C goes from hot to cold when you weither stop or accellerate sharply. If so, you have a broken blend door which is a $50 part but a $600 repair. This sounds like it's probably the case. SEARCH keyword "blend door"
As for the CEL, do get the codes read, then come back here and do a SEARCH on the code(s). You'll find that EGR and "lean" fault codes are, by far, the most common. O2 sensors themselves are a couple of places down the list. Depending on where you're at, auto parts stores will read the code for free. Write down the codes but don't buy any parts until you've researched the fault codes. AutoZone, for example, is famous for selling EGR valves and oxygen sensors when not needed because the idiots try to diagnose a system based solely on the fault codes. Perhaps your naval unit has a motor pool. If so, maybe one of your mechanics will slap the scan tool on your truck and pull the codes for you.
as far as the ac shutting off . that does not sound like a blend door problem.
the ac should shut off when you give it the gas real hard. have you had the level of r134a in the ac ? not really sure if that is the problem.
