hay all my fellow ford friends i just found this site and its pretty cool. you guys all seem like really helpfull people. im in the process of restoreing my 64 short bed. i have a cobra jet 460 pretty much crate except for interseptor heads and paint and chrome trimings. im currently pondering my front end. i want to go rack and pinion but still havent decided on how to do it anyway great to find this site and im sure all be talking to you soon..
Ty1on, you would end up having to fabricate a support/crossmember for the rack and pinion to mount on. The way the 64's frame work is set up stock there is no way possible to do so. Unless of course you plan on welding a newer front end on. I have been comparing all sorts of truck for this type of set up. If you do happen to find something let me know. I would definately be interested.
go to a local mall or junkyard and crawl under a Ford Aerostar minivan. Check out the crossmember with the rack and pinion and big disk brakes. Will make you go "Hmmmmmmm". Seriously, we installed one of these on a 53-56 frame last year and it was sweet.
How big is the lug pattern? 4 1/2" or is it bigger? Also how much prep work is involved in the swap. Meaning how much grinding and so on did you have to do?
the Aerostar uses a 4 1/2" bolt pettern. Either redrill your rear axles or use a car 9" rearend. As far as prep work, the minivan has a flat space that you weld to the bottom of your frame. The truck frame was 1" shorter than the minivan so we welded a 1" piece of steel to the top of the rail. We drilled this piece to mount the upper a-frames. Was actually pretty easy as swaps go.
