newbie here from canada. I'm planning to retire my 300ci l6 and drop in a V8 engine. My truck ia a '96 f150, e4od trans, 2wd. I'm looking for the simplest way to go, probably be buying a crate engine. i'm looking for a better hiway style power...ie:speed, don't do much towing, mpg is not a big concern. i've read that the 302 bell will bolt directly to the e4od, is this a similar situation with the 351w? any help is appreciated.
thanks,
No emails in posts - thank you

Yes, the 300, 302, and 351 all share the same bellhousing pattern.
Buying a crate motor is a bad idea, because then you will need to buy basically everything else under the hood - lower & upper intake, exhaust manifolds, accessory brackets, injectors, sensors, wiring harness, and computer.
It would be so much easier to keep the 300. It's a great motor and better, IMO, than the 302, and about the same as a 351 power wise. But neither one of them will ever be as reliable as the 300.
We have a Bronco with a 351 and two trucks with the 300. About the only difference is above 3000 rpms, all with 3.55's. The 351 is still ready to go, and the 300 is out of air. Below 3000 rpms, you can't tell the difference.
thanks for your reply, as much as i've read, torque ratings are very similar, but horsepower is much different between the three. i'm looking for a better hiway performance and i know that the 300 tops out at 100-110k for comfort...after that it's pushed too hard. a friend has a 351 that does wonders on the hiway. believe me, i'm a strong supporter of my 300, as it is a strong supporter of me!!! QUESTION...does any of the accessories from the 300 fit any of the other two?? ie:water pump, starter, alternater, rad, etc...thanks again
I owned a 300, my friend has one, my dad had one (carb'd that I've driven pleanty of times), etc etc...as well as the other V-8s...pleanty of experience...
300s are great on durability...boring to drive and weak on horsepower. The only thing they have going for them is the durability and low end torque (max tq at 2000 rpm).
The 351 is definitely more powerful than a 300, by far (relative). It has an extra 50hp and 50tq on it.
351 - 185/210hp - 310ft-lbs. The 300 has baout 150-160hp and about 260ft-lbs.
My 302 (205hp/270tq) will smoke my buddy's 300, same truck except mine was heavier and had larger tires.
IMO the 351 is the better setup for these trucks...a 460 would be too much work to put in.
so the next question would be, 302 or 351. i understand that the 302 has a wider range of available performance upgrades, but the 351 has more power to start with. is there much difference in the work involved with the swap between the two?? besides the added weight? will both "simply" bolt to the e4od tranny. the rest i should be able to manage but i don't want to get into switching tranny's, shafts, diffs, just the heart.
thanks again, sherm
anyone ever dual straight-piped a 300-l6?? pro's...cons
anyone ever dual straight-piped a 300-l6?? pro's...cons
i put a set of long tube hedman hedders and 2 and a quarter true duals with cherrybombs on my 66 F100 with a 300 I6. i could tell a definate difference in power and the sound isnt bad....LOUD... it sounds awesome at idle but a little too buzzy when i get on the gas
351 is a big brother to the 302...many of the parts interchange.
My 393 has 351 rods and 302 type pistons in it.
The 351 is wider and has a taller deck than a 302...otherwise they're almost the same. The 351 has a much stronger block and is a much better platform for building a performance engine.
The extra stroke of the 351 is also a major reason to go with it over a 302...the 302 suffers from a lack of low end tq and just doesn't make enough to haul around a huge truck - save em' for mustangs...drove one for 2-3 years and will never go back to that.
The 351 uses the same heads and cam (among other things) as a 302...the intake is different though. The only thing about the heads is that the 302 uses 7/16" bolts instead of the 351's 1/2" bolts...no biggy though.
Head on over to the 302/351 engine forum for more information and help on motor subjects
You're right Mustang. My 96 with the 300 is boring as crap to drive. An with the AC on it has no power what so ever.
Everyone's got their opinion, but I really have to question people with 300's that make claims like this. My truck has more than enough power, with or without the A/C running. My guess is that something is wrong with your setup - maybe timing or clogged air filter or exhaust.
As far as being fun to drive, it's a truck. If you want fun to drive, buy a BMW.
While something could be wrong, it's probably unlikely....with only 160hp they just arn't very quick...
The 300 probably feels more powerful than it is because of it's torque...it'll haul it's butt up a hill but it can't get out of it's own way off the stop light...
I've had years of seat time between a 300, 302, and 351...and the 351 I have has more than put a smile on my face. It's got all kinds of power for a 175k mile beater engine.
