trans grinds in second

I have a 97 F150 4.2L 5 speed with a 6 or 7 in lift......when i am downshifting into second it grinds like hell!!!!! sometimes i have to come to a complete stop to get it in to second!!! could this be a gearing problem in the rear????

Unlikely, I would take it in to a dealership and get the tranny looked at ASAP supposing that is it, which it probably is. The more you drive it like that, more and more metal shavings are coming off when it grinds and those metal shavings will begin to mess up other gears and make it more expensive to fix.

I know certain jeeps need a tranny spacer after a few inches of lift, because of the angle of the driveshaft, and these may be the same. It actually may not be anything in the tranny, but your lift that's causing this problem. Take it to a dealer. Not something you wanna mess with yourself.

Sounds like your synchronizer is going out or already gone. If you don't know transmissions take it to a reputable shop. The dealer will probably be the most expensive place.
