Today I bought my first PS, it's 97 F-250, S/C, LB, XL for $ 8,000.00 Can, it has 133,000 km and in perfect condition. "Too bad it's not a 4x4." So the very first thing I'm going to do is to change the thermostat to 203, but I'm having problem locating one in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Help...
wrong forum brother, try the 99.4 to 97. Not that someone here won't have an answer for ya but there a subtile differences from 97 to 99. Here is a line to diesel site where I ordered mine, it may work for you. http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=186
Thank you, this truck has 4:10 ratio, I don't haul much, is good idea to chage the gear ratio to 3:55? and what is the most economical way to improve the mileage?
Best fuel mileage mod out there is your right foot, Keep it under 1700 RPM and you will get the best mileage. A taller rearend would definatally make this a lot easier.

Changing gear ratio can get pricy.
Keep your foot out of it = Better milage
Stay away from this site.
The mods you discover here will reduce your mileage.
Welcome, Just kidding of course. You will find many ways to improve your milage and get HP too.
Change the Downpipe with a 4-5 inch exhaust + Good air box or a kwik filter are good mods to start with.
Gages should be next.
EGT, Boost and maybe a tranny temp gage.
I almost had heart attack when I saw " Stay away from this site!!!! & The mods you discover here will reduce your mileage!!!" SCARYYYYYYYY. Then I read just kidding, my heart beat went to normal. You're good!!!!!
Thanks, I drove it for the first time today, but sure it was noisy compare with gas engines, I think I'll get comfortable with it in time, but when the engine is cold, it goes very slow, unless I floor it, no power, almost like some think is choking it. I drove it for approx 1/2 hr, the temp gauge shows just below N. Is this normal? Sorry I know this is a stupid question, it's my first diesel truck>
Thanks
Im up in Quesnel, origionally from kelowna. I bought my PSD up in Fort St John. You NEED to let your engine warm up before you drive it. Quickest way to do that is find an auxillary idle controller to idle your truck up. As for the gears, Ive got 4:10s and 33" tires and I turn 1860-rpm @ 100-km/h. You should be turning close to the same, maybe a little more. I havent been down in Van for a long time (got a buddy who moved to the 'wack), but its a big place so theres alot of stop and go 4:10s will get your truck going with less effort from the engine. Just keep your right foot out of it and you should be good. I get about 370 km on highway per tank, and around 300km/tank in town.

Sorry, Didn't meaqn to scare ya.
Yep, they are noisy but you will grow to like the sound.
Check the engine temp with something other than the gage in the truck. You may need a thermostat. When the engine temp (oil too) is cold the EBPV (Exhaust Back Pressure Valve) is closed. This really holds the engine from making HP.
BTW: disconnect the EBPV to to see if you have a difference. I'm looking for picts to help you find it. The valave is located right under the turbo. Unplug the electrical connector.
... The valave is located right under the turbo. ...
Actually, the valve is in the exhaust side of the turbo housing; the actuator is underneath. When EBPV is closed, you'll notice a distinct hissing sound at the exhaust pipe.
Thanks!
I think I've to respect my work horse a little better, I'm so used to start & go, never gave any worm up time for any of my trucks. I guess I'm very lucky for the last 30 yrs, no major repairs at all, just few oil changes, lights etc... Think about it, all my trucks were from the best "Ford". Do you agree? Also, can I just eliminate EBPV at all?
My 97 F250 4x4, 5.7L engine with 4:10 gets 330km on hwy & 300 in city per tank. I think diesl should get better then that, what do I know, this is my first diesl truck... I'm just wondering.
