2007 4.6

I saw a spec Sheet on the 2007 F 150. The HP rating for the 4.6 V8 went from 231 HP to 248 HP. Does anyone know if they improved the engine? Or just the way they calculated it? I sure coulduse 17 more HP!

Go to the 2007 F150 specs page and you see the 4.6 is still rated at 231hp... perhaps Ford is thinking about the 3v head 4.6L? Maybe they reverse engineered a custom tune? You got me, but I can't believe they're still offering 2v 4.6s. That just blows me away.

The 3V 4.6L in the Mustang is 300HP and averages about 270 @ the rear wheels.
With the VCT, I don't know why they don't put it in the trucks either.

I saw that when I surfed into the Ford vehicles site yesterday... and that's from the 3V engine. Makes me wonder if Ford is waiting on using the 3V 4.6s until the 6.2L engine sees its entrance later in the 2007 model. Who would anyone buy the 5.4. if you can buy the 4.6 with about the same numbers for say, $600 less? Perhaps the 5.4 is on it's last legs?

i dont think they will do away with the 5.4 look at chevy how many engine options do they have...but you never know...i searched around and the 4.6l 3v seems to only have 300 lbs/ft is that true and if it is i would rather have the extra 65 lbs/ft

We kinda had a similar topic idea when it came to gas mileage in the '97-'03 F150 forum. It was a resounding cry of "go with the 4.6." It threw me... Fuel mileage seemed to be the big deal, not the power. I was all for the 5.4 when I fiugred I'd only see a mile or two per gallon difference. The tide seems to have shifted as the gas prices have gone higher.

Ford has been short on engine options for at least the last 25 years, perhaps playing in their favor. Bare in mind that GM offers a V-6 (4.3) and 4 V-8s (4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and 8.1), and could put an inline 5 in if they chose to - but I think GM is now seeing the error of being a corporate giant with too many arms/heads. Both Ford and Dodge offer a V-6, 2 V-8s, and a V-10 (which may be disappearing in the future). Nissan only offers the 5.6, Toyota a V-6 and 4.7 V-8 (and soon a big V-8)... I think the option list may shrink to a V-6 and small V-8 in the 1/2 ton trucks, with a medium V-8 and diesel in the 3/4 and 1 tons.

Point is, many GM truck people I know would not consider the GM 5.3... they'd opt for the 6.0, even the 8.1 if available. When Ford does offer the Hurricane, I think you'll see the 5.4 sales taper off for a similar reason - no replacement for displacement. Those that want the power will buy it, not settle for a middle of the road like the 5.4 will become.

All told, Ford needs to redesign all of their engines. There are many options people would like to see and don't - gas saving options with the same power or more. That's the future.

Money is what this will boil down to. What are we willing to spend (fuel or power) and what are the auto makers willing to spend (design and production).

truthfully i think when the hurricane does surface they might go dodges route and have it the base and only gas engine avaiable for the 3/4 and 1 ton and then the diesel and have it as a highet gas engine available but still have the 4.6 and 5.4 for the 1/2 tons

Guess time will tell... it seems that large market automaking has become a gamble for the North American giants. In the next few years we may not have the choices we have now among automakers...

I do agree with your assessment on the availability if the Hurricane goes into production soon. I just wish it would be sooner rather than later - the expected 2009 redesign expected to go on sale in 2008 is over a year away - Ford may lose more of its market share without it.
