I'm in the market for a new digital camera and I'm torn between the Nikon and the Canon Digital SLR's. I'm leaning toward the Nikon because it uses the nice compact little SD card instead of the massive CF card the Canon uses. It is only $100 difference between the two, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with either to share.
I would tend to lean toward Nikon because of their background in professional photography and the fact that some of that will undoubtedly trickle down into the amateur/semi-pro products... but, do your research. Check this site out. http://www.steves-digicams.com/
I found this about the D2X: "Even worse, some camera makers want to ensure you have to buy special software from them and only them in order to read your files. See here about how Nikon is encrypting the raw files from the D2X to ensure that only their software will work properly. This means that if Japanese industrial giant Mitsubishi, parent of Nikon, wanted to raise profits they may already have set the current software to time-out your ability to read today's raw files in a few years, and then the only way you could see your photos is to buy new software."
Had already gone out and bought that exact camera before you had posted that. The reviews and the votes for the Nikon swayed me so off to Best Buy I went just about two hours ago. I was just messing around taking silly pictures of my girlfriend and I already love this thing. Going to see how it reacts with a full battery charge.
You'll love it. I'm learning to use my wife's D50 and the camera is fantastic. I'm not much of a photographer, but the D50 in "auto" mode gets me some pretty good pics even without being able to use some of her better Nikkor lenses. So far I've only been allowed to use the 18-55mm lens that came with it and a Tamron 28-300mm lens. Some day I hope to be "trusted" enough to use the other lenses. Another member "Bob Ayers" uses a D70 and he's posted some great pictures. I also went and bought a little $12 SanDisk card reader to download the pics and it's much faster than the cable.
I understand that the Nikon cameras will take all their lenses going back to the 50's. I'm not sure about Canon. I do know they are coming out with a less expensive SLR this fall w/ over 10 meg. I don't know if it's out yet or not. I'm looking towards a Christmas purchase myself.

Yes, Nikon has already come out with a cost reduced version of their D200 (10MP), it's called the D80. I'll vote for Nikon, I've been extremely happy with my D70.....You can check out some of my pictures on my photo-sharing site:
Not too many DSLRs where you can use their 35mm camera lenses.
I know Canon makes a EF-S lenses for their less exspensive digital SLR cameras.
Also one big factor with most D-SLR camera is the smaller image sensor size automatically increases the focal length of the lens, you usually need to run a wider angle lens.
All of Nikon's 35mm autofocus lenses will mount and meter with their DSLRs. You can actually mount almost any Nikon lens from 1977 onward, but the manual focus lenses will only meter with the more expensive Nikon DSLRs such as the D200, D2X and D2H. This is not an issue to someone buying their first camera as they'll be in the market for a lens anyway.
Nikon has a series of "DX" lenses that address the issue with wide angle lenses. They are built to work exclusively with DSLRs and feature wider focal length ranges to negate the smaller sensor found in DSLRs.

Glad you're enjoying the new camera. I felt the same way when I first bought mine. It's really a joy to use after trying relatives' and friends' point and shoot digitals, and being frustrated with having to hold the button for about an hour to get it to take a picture. Everything feels instant on the D50.
If you go to the site I posted of Ken Rockwell's review on the D50, there's a link near the beginning of the article about his way of setting up the D50 with a few custom settings. I have yet to do that on mine.... still just using the various auto settings, but plan to try his custom setup when I get around to it.
PS - Bob, awesome pics in that other thread of the humming bird!
