rear axle clunk????

hey guys! i posted a question about a rearend clunk a few days ago asking about the axle bearings. 1997 ford f-150 off road w/144000. the axles will move in and out about 1/8 of an inch. i was first told that it might be the axle bearings. now im hearing that if the clutch pack is worn that it might do the same thing. just trying to get an idea before tearing the rearend apart for no reason. thanks for any help!!! btw im enjoying the ford more than i thought i would!
