Manual lock-outs

My truck has the manual lock-outs but it also has the little *** for the 4x4. I can seem to turn the lock-outs either way and was wondering what the deal was. 01' F250

So if it is a snowy day and I want to be able to 4x4 on the fly then I should just leave them locked in all day? If it's the same as my 78 then I know exactly what to do.

I just went out and looked at it a little closer and it says on the hub AUTO ans LOCK. The saleman told me it was for when, if the *** doesn't work then you can manually lock them in by turning it to lock. Is this right. If so, then does that mean if the *** fails then you can't have 4low?

no you have automatically locking front hubs, when you use the shift on the fly in the cab the front hubs should auto-engage, the lock position is for when the system isnt working correctly or you want to make certain the hubs are engaged

Funny how salemen know nothing about what they sell.

Your hubs are actuated by vacum in auto if you turn the **** on the dash to 4hi ,this commands the electric shift motor to shift the transfercase, then a vacum solenoid puts a vacum pulse to the front hubs via vacum lines.

If the front hubs fail to lock you can overide it by using manual option(which this happens quite often with this system)

To get to 4lo you need to be stopped with foot firmly on the brake, completely stopped. When you turn the **** on the dash

As FortyFords said. He just advised me on auto hub problems on my 01 250. And if you are going somewhere you may need 4wd or the weather is getting bad, lock 'em manually, its worth the trouble. Just be sure to unlock when you don't need 4wd.
I would think Ford would know that vacuum is best used on carpets..
