I went to the parts store to get a trans filter and fluid. Picked up what I THOUGHT was filter for my trans. Stated in on the filter change and wham! "Hmmm, this filter doesn't look like mine." I go back to the parts store look in the paper catalog. Yeah, I got the right filter. Wrong transmission though. Turns out I have a FMX or Cruis-a-matic. And here I sit thinking I had a C4 all along. Boy don't I feel stupid. So here come my questions.
1. Is the FMX tranny stronger then a C4?
2. What is a good thing about the FMX?
3. Has anyone rebuilt one? I found brass shavings in the bottom of the oil pan. disc pack or bushings I believe.
4. Are there any B&M shift kits available? If it's worth my time.
5. Anyone have a book on the FMX code data plate. I found mine still attatched.
Hi Mark, the C-O-M was the factory auto of that day, and is a decent tranny. The design is about 60 years old so improvements have come along. If it is working ok use it. I just pulled one from one of my trucks, because I am installing a tilt from a 79 and it has a C6 selector patten and I had a good C6 on the floor. I had my C-O-M rebuilt about two years ago and it works fine.
