I had a similar starter problem. Mine would start grinding every couple of weeks though. It turned out I wasn't getting proper voltage to my solenoid. I would start by checking all of your wires, cables and connections. Make sure that full battery power is getting to the starter. Also check for a good ground strap.

The engine always stops in one of four positions due to the position of the pistons inside. If you don't believe this check the wear marks on any properly functioning engine flywheel. The "kick back" is due to the pistons under compression. The Bendix should retract under that condition.

hey well after shimmin the starter at an attempt to see what was up i ripped a few teeth right of the flywheel....so in turn removed the tranny...put a new ring gear on the flywheel, resurfaced it and put a new clutch kit in it....and put it all back together....put thicker wires and a new solenoid still having the same dogum problem.....so instead of buyin this ****ty reman i bought a brand new outta the factory and wen it comes in ill try that.... any advice?

I'm about stumped also. I never have had to shim a Ford starter. Never knew it was required. Is your ground to the engine good?

Yep, plain crappy old Advance or Autozone starters. I had 3 go bad within 1 week. The problem with those starters is that they are rebuilt starters, which means the bad part is replaced and cleaned up, then put back in the box. A new 1 or truely remanufactured will be all new inside.

To many to list

One of the problems is some people tell others:"that starter will work in lots of engines"

Well as a matter of fact is the intricate parts & internals of starters are different and you need the proper application as noted in the above post.

Check your numbers to the original OEM when it comes to starters.
I posted a simliar post in the FAQ thread.

To those who want to know the original application..ask me I have the original application book.

This has been an interesting read. I have a similar problem with my 76 390 F-250. Starter won't engage correctly and only after rotating the crank can I get it to engage.... sometimes. Will be checking the alignment and teeth on the flywheel as soon as I can get it into my garage. Hopefully it's the starter and not the ring gear that's bad. Don't want to pull the transfer case and trans if I don't have to.
