hey yall its been a while since i been on hows yall doin?! well this starter thing on my truck is drivin me crazy! i got a 77 f250 highboy....5.8 351 and every 4 months it starts makin this nasty grinding sound....and every time i start it the noise gets worse and worse and worse til thats it it wont start.....take it to advace get it tested....grinding noise...get new starter and 4 months l8r....again same problem...ive shimmed it and the bendix is not the problem...i had my ol lady bump the starter while i was underneath lookin at the flywheel...it is perfect...no marks i noticed though that when she tried to start it as i was under there that when u let go of the key the flywheel kicks back...in return kicking back the bendix on the starter....what is causing this kick back?! grrrrr
I had a similar starter problem. Mine would start grinding every couple of weeks though. It turned out I wasn't getting proper voltage to my solenoid. I would start by checking all of your wires, cables and connections. Make sure that full battery power is getting to the starter. Also check for a good ground strap.
The engine always stops in one of four positions due to the position of the pistons inside. If you don't believe this check the wear marks on any properly functioning engine flywheel. The "kick back" is due to the pistons under compression. The Bendix should retract under that condition.
hey well after shimmin the starter at an attempt to see what was up i ripped a few teeth right of the flywheel....so in turn removed the tranny...put a new ring gear on the flywheel, resurfaced it and put a new clutch kit in it....and put it all back together....put thicker wires and a new solenoid still having the same dogum problem.....so instead of buyin this ****ty reman i bought a brand new outta the factory and wen it comes in ill try that.... any advice?
mine does the same thing. i got the crappy autozone starter with a lifetime waranty, i just keep getting a new one. hope someone here has some answers.
Yep, plain crappy old Advance or Autozone starters. I had 3 go bad within 1 week. The problem with those starters is that they are rebuilt starters, which means the bad part is replaced and cleaned up, then put back in the box. A new 1 or truely remanufactured will be all new inside.
well hey yall i have the answer! so i think....i called up davie battery and alternator...a name thats been here for a VERY long time...they say that the one i need has to be a ten tooth starter.....so i pulled the one outta my truck....which by the way conked out this morning.....and counted only 9 teeth! advance has been sellin me 9 tooth starters this whole time....but also the idea of gettin a BRAND NEW reman or brand new starter makes more sense....i mean replaceing the bushings and all that as well not just a post on the side....ill keep in touch i just dropped the starter off and ill be gettin it back truly rebuilt(friend of mine at davie battery...) with a 10 tooth gear on it...post yall l8r
This has been an interesting read. I have a similar problem with my 76 390 F-250. Starter won't engage correctly and only after rotating the crank can I get it to engage.... sometimes. Will be checking the alignment and teeth on the flywheel as soon as I can get it into my garage. Hopefully it's the starter and not the ring gear that's bad. Don't want to pull the transfer case and trans if I don't have to.
well i am astounded...i didnt know thats how these trucks were supposed to start....this truck started up soooo sweet with that 10 tooth starter and quiet...no ruff start or grinding sound....just think this whole time bout 200 dollars worth in starters...a new ring gear and the labor of dropping the tranny and all that jazz for 20 dollars to rebuild a starter with a 10 tooth gear....i almost cried wen i heard this thing start.....well theres the answer for me i hope it works for yall
