Kenny get a claw hammer and hook it on the shifter linkage closest to the fire wall and get it pulled up to netural. You should be good to go then.
TIP Always lift out of first with a slight pull to the wheel and when it is fully in netural let it fall fully and then lift in second. Never try to speed shift from first to second, unless you are willing to stop and get out to pull the linkage under the hood.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Ken.
BLOCK BOTH SIDES OF THE WHEELS trust my flat toes!
What johns saying is true shift the truck like a H only sideways if you try to shift like a Y you'll hang it up for sure.
The problem liys in several spots.
1) Lower collum bearings wear out.
2) Lower collum wear face (thin platic sheet bettwen the shift forks)wear out.
3) collum shift tube wears.
4) Rubber bushings in linkage ends wear and dry out.
5) the trany's shift fork detent's (spring loaded ball) wear so thery don't "Snap" in to gear like when new.
All are "fixible" but it's not long before you'll need to do it again. So just learn to "H" it. Up forward up.
