hi guys i just set up my account today but i have used this site before and you guys are always a big help. ive had my truck for over a year and im only 14 . my idea is concerning getting the gas tank out of the cab. right now the plan is to take a 67 mustang gas tank and put it in the frame rails. the only hitch with this is where oh where should i put the hole to fill the tank(sorry couldnt think of the right term). now my idea is to put the tail light asembly on a hinge and allow it to swing down so i can put that filler hole in behind the taillight. if any one can see any flaws in this or potental dangers please let me know any help will be apreciated
If there was the tiniest short front your tailight the fumes from the gas will go KABOOOOOOOOOOM. Probably wont blow you truck up but could cause a big fire. Don't do it!
you could do the filler hole in the bed floor
between the wheel and wheel well
in the top of the bed side (maybe in a stake hole)
flip down your licence plate and fill er up
When I din mine I came up into bed close to side and back towards tailgate, I then built a housing to surround it with a spin type top and a hasp for closing it kinda looke a little crude until I did the spray on bed liner now it looks awsome view my gallery for pictures of the bed and filler neck housing. just an idea for you to consider. It's good to hear a new generation of slick builders. Good luck on your build.
Staying low for now

Seems an issue with the Mustang tank conversion, all the one's I've seen placed the filler neck in middle of the bed. The topic has come up on occasion and recall number of members who moved the tank posting some great suggestions. Currently driving 65 flareside while my styleside is being stored, so having difficulty visualizing. Almost tempted to drive 300 miles to take a look. Sounds like a great trick solution. Wonder if the filler neck would have to be routed below the bed, if so, would there be a sufficient fall. If decide to make the modification, please post pic's. May have already seen this article, explains where owner moved the location of the filler neck on a Mustang tank. http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/04..._tank_install/ Good luck.
i was going to go to the smooth sheetmetal in the rear, driver side corner of the bed. i was going to put a recessed filler cap and a billet or polished aluminum hatch over top of it. but i like the idea of the tailight. i dont see how the fumes could ignite if there was a spark. not that i couldn't imagine it happening at all. but the fumes would have to build up and i think the spark would have to be substantial. maybe if there was some gas spilled and it was laying on the filler neck and the truck was sitting for a while. not arguing that it wouldnt happen, just that, for the coolness of the idea, and i believe a small amount of risk, it would be worth it.
thanks guys i still like the idea except for that kaboom part. i still think im gunna go for it and replace and insulate those wire's really good. with the fall it gose down just ove a foot and it would go between two to three feet to the side. i dont know if that would be enough of a drop. thanks again and i sure hope i dont need that fire extinguisher im going to put in the back until next time
Why not mount a mid 80's Bronco tank? Yeah it takes a lot to fill it but you would have less trips. The best set-up I've seen uses a marine grade filler cap and polished stainless steel plate. The marine filler needs a key/lever to open it. Plus it doesn't seep water like a normal gas cap would. The ghetto set-up involves taking your current tank and placing it up againt the front of the bed with cargo straps and 3/8 copper water tubbing for fuel line. Think oh crap I have to get home and there is a hole in the tank.
If you already have the Mustang tank, may want to consider relocating angle and location of filler opening. If not, there may be a tank available that meet the design you come up with. Suggest browse a few Ford parts catalogs. NPD, LMC, and Sacramento Vintage Ford, to name a couple, can go online, or call and they will send free catalog, not necessarily to purchase, but to look at pic's where they list year(s), and type vehicle; truck or passenger, and see if any meet or come close to design you come up with. Unfortunately, the 'pick your part' salvage yards puncture the tanks rendering them useless, but wrecking yard may be able to help. Most Truck magazines list business that have refab. tanks or make them to buyer's spec's but that can get expensive. With any luck, may find the ideal tank is out of a 75 Ford Pinto. Anyhow, couple suggestions, or food for thought.
Browsing '61-66' forum and came across series of pic's 'cobraguy' posted on his 61. Suggest taking a look. He appears to have simular setup as you mentioned; although, his is routed thru the bed rail just above the tail light. It's close to direction you are going and looks good. Still may want to consider relocating tank opening location. Not sure why I feel uncomfortable with the filler neck running across the back and under the frame. When I make the change I'll either either go with your design, possibly different tank, or relocate opening of Mustang tank, or 'cobraguy's' design with slight variation by lowering cap to where it sets even with the rail or perhaps slightly lower with a lid.
i looked at cobraguys uni the filler hole isnt exacly what i have in mind but it is close. i still think it would be cooler to let the tail light swing downand fill her up than to just stick the nozle in the stake hole. moveing the hole on the tank is a good idea it would cut of about a foot and a half horizontal distance. what i want to do with the setup is to take a filler neck from a newer car so i would have the self closeing hole. i will have to look into pinto and bronco tanks.
Cody when I put my tank in I was going to put the filler behind the tail light like you describe. The problem I ran into is the vapor recovery systems for gas pumps here in California make it real hard to reach the fill tube. If I were to cut the end cap and hinge the top so the whole top half of it opened it might work. But just hinging the tail light bucket won't do it. Rich
cobra guy sorry if i sound a little dense here but what do you mean by vapor recovery systems. i went and pulled my tail light and the tail light on my dads 63 uni i noticed their a little bit different. the bucket on my 65 is smaller and i think it would be better suited to my idea but next trip to the gas staion i'm bringing my tape along to mesure the nozle and see if it will fit.
He's talking about those ribbed tubes that surround the nozzle on gas pumps. California must have more than here in Phx, AZ, as I've only seen a few stations with those things. Here is a good picture of one http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/m...1n30vapor.html
It's down a little ways on that page.
I too am wanting to put the filler behind the light, but hadn't thought about the vapor recovery things. I really hate them when I'm filling my motorcycle, because that big thing scratches the paint.
