Incorrect Temperture Reading.

Hey.

My friend has a 2002 F150. He has the Evic/Over head consule (i believe is what its called) which reads the temperture of outside... His seems to be malfunctioning... it only reads 40'C and nothin in F... it must be a broken temperture reader in the dash... but it could be suttin else so he asked me to try to find out...

On my 03 Screw, there is a big button to press next to the readout. One press goes F, one more goes C, one more off, one more and it's back to F.

So maybe that button isn't working?

mne has "locked" on -40 degrees several times over the past year, then gone back to "normal" after 10 minutes???????? right now it appears to read 8 degrees under what the local bank bulletin boards read. it was o.k. a year ago.--- i have not looked yet, but want to find out where the probe is. i think the wires might be loose, rusty, etc. might have a similar problem.

I thought I read somewhere that the temp sensor was behind the grille. Trianlge, wedge, or something shaped. Maybe the wire is disconnected and that's just what the display reads then.

the manual says if the probe is shorted out the display will read either -40C or -40F. the probe is in front of the radiator, drivers side. you open the hood, take off the plstic panel over the front of the radiator and it is the plastic switch witht he small probe sticking out the front. the probe should have a resistance of 8000-14000 ohms at ambient temp (80 degrees). the two wires should have continuity to ground it tested with a meter.

on my 2001 you can look thru the grill on the drivers side and see it bolted to the radiator wrap around. i took of fthe plastic cover over the radiator and it is bolted on right there. took 5 minutes to get it off including the plastic cover.
