to the next level. . . maybe

Well I've been driving around a lot with my mods mostly done. The only thing not installed yet is the water injection. For those who don't remember, this is what I've done so far. . . Hmax steel wire head gaskets, high rev kit, H2E turbo, Super Stage II's, cerametalic clutch, oil bypass kit, Max Chip and 6 inch exhaust. I have a procomp 6.5 inch lift, track bars and 35" mud terrains. Without knowing what the effects of the water will be yet, these are my thoughts. While its hard to gauge power while driving, doesn't seem like it should. yeah it moves, moves good, but I think my buddies chiped 6.0 will take me. hes got the Hmax mach 7, lots of power with that chip. She smokes a ton! I mean, I've never seen so much smoke. Take the space shuttles smoke on launch, turn it black and thats what I got. The turbo take a while to get to 15 psi, but once you hit 15, it rockets to 38, and I mean rockets. Almost instant. at full boost, the smoke kinda clears. I can't stay in it very long. From a stop, half way through fourth gear I have to let off because I've reached 1300 degrees. I know of guys making more power than me, that don't have the temp problems. Those with experience, please chime in. I'm supposed to be somewhere around 485 hp at the crank. thats what Hmax has dynoed engines with the same setup at. So from ther very long description(sorry) Tell me what you think. What is the next level? Lets get this thing as cool as we can without water first. And lets up the power. I need to take out my buddies 6.0.

1300* screams "intercooler" to me.

first off, you didnt mention Headstuds. im sure you did them too, right? if not, that's the next level.

the cooler air charge from a nice big intercooler will make you more power because it is cramming more oxygen molecules in there, much better. go with a spearco intercooler, from BlackWidow Diesel. they are pretty pricey, but you get what you pay for.

after that, i would think nitrous will help clear up some of that smoke. costs almost as much as the IC, however i wouldn't use that as my main route of cooling, because you only use it for racing purposes and on the dyno, things like that. an intercooler would be a constant-duty method of cooling your intake air charge. the water injection is also another sporadic-use methods to cool the exhaust temps. if you were to use it all the time you would be using alot, and i mean ALOT of washer fluid.

Like Kris said....head studs....yes/no? I hope yes at this point. Spearco or H-Max Tapercore would both be good IC upgrades.

But, my honest opinion is that you've got some tuning issues. Turbo shouldn't take that long to spool with proper tuning, should not make that much smoke once it hits full boost, and shouldn't have that high of EGT's with a properly sized H2E. Hypermax are some smart folks, but they are capable of mistakes too. Give them a call about your chip, and see what they have to say.

On a different note, I wish that H-Max took more of an interest in the 7.3 market. Who do you think made the injectors that are in Cale's (BTS) twin turbo OBS truck....running low 12's (a bit more tuning and it will be 11's) on fuel only, and dynoed over 700 HP before the tires started to spin on the rollers? There just isn't the money in it for them. Their bigger market is the big time tractors that are pulling.

followup

I spoke with hypermax for a while about this issue. I'm not really concerned about the turning aspect, its a bigger turbo, it will take longer to spool up than a smaller one with the same sticks. I mean, it doesn't take long, and its only slow from a stop. Once I get it spooled up, it stays there between shifts till I let off. I just am thinking that these injectors are too much fuel nozzle and not enough oil. . . causing a lot of unproperly burned fuel(black smoke) and heat. On the headstuds note, hypermax said I need not worry about them. THey have a set I could buy, but he said it was overkill. hes got engines running way more boost on stock bolts and never had a problem. For those with intercooler upgrades, give me your numbers, what you saw, and then whats in your rig. Thanks

Big oil will definately help with the smoke and EGT's. Do you know what the injectors have had done to them?

My Spearco IC dropped EGT temps about 100-150 degrees from the 6.0 cooler, that had already dropped them 75-100 degrees. So, I'd say the spearco is good for an average 200-300 EGT drop, which would certianly help you a lot. See my sig for my setup.

Still don't know how I feel about not having studs. I do know, that they will be going in my motor when injectors go in.
