I checked out this mint 2000 Ranger XLT, 4 X 4, extended cab last weekend. Nice truck. Test drove it yesterday. At 46000 miles, it is like out of the box. Picked up the truck today at the dealer. All of s sudden, there is this overwhelming smell of mold outside the truck. Not inside, but outside. I had to back it out of the garage into the driveway tonight hoping some fresh air would help. The smell was not there when I looked at it or test drove it. Any clue???

Did you wisely remember to check out the history of this vehicle to see if it was one of the tens of thousands of vehicles that went underwater when Katrina hit about a year ago? Did you pull up the carpet to look for sand indicating a flood vehicle. Out of curiosity, did you scour this vehicle carefully for any evidence of it being under water before you signed on (there are many ways to look and figure this out), Katrina or otherwise?
*If this is a flood vehicle, do yourself a huge favor, cut your losses and jettison it ASAP. Electrical problems will make your life a living hell in the days to follow.

This truck was a local trade (I contacted previous owner before purchasing). Not a flood vehicle by any means (live in NYS). The previous owner never had this problem. Smell is better this morning. Will keep after it to further investigate. No water in the doors or under the carpets. Maybe the AC drain plug???
He said it's outside, so it was parkse over artillery mold(thats what i call it anyhow). it shoots it's spoures out and they stick to stuff. they can have a god awful smell. look under it, and at the base paint line of your truck. if you see little black dits, they kinda look like fly crap, then there is your problem. it's a real pain to get the stuff off.
Smell seems to be gone. I left the truck yesterday (used the family sedan for a day trip). Got home, smell was gone. I wonder if it only happens whan it gets wet. The dealer washed and wased it prior to my picking it up.
I suppose it's possible that when it was reno'ed at the dealer, they got something on the exhaust; you drove it and got it nice and warm and that whatever got cooked off.
