I had a question about my 4wd. I was messing around under the truck the other day and when i turn the front shaft the passenger side steering knuckle spins and the driver side spins a little but then stops. Its a 90 f250 with the borgwarner manual shift and lockable hubs. any tips would help. Another question, in order to repack the wheel hub do i have to pull out the locking hub? cause when i put them in i had to rig up the locking pin and i don't want to mess with that again.

Reason: typo
Yes you will have to remove the locking hub to reback the wheel hub. Its a b...... I know and I would take it to a shop if it was mine. I dont like the sounds of the front drive however, I hate to jump on off the deepend, but if one side spins the otherside should spin at the same time in the other direction. Anything less and your differantial is toast. (Well maybe not. If you have true four wheel drive it wount.)
Hope this helps,
Brad
i don't like the sound of that. One thing i forgot to mention was that when i bought the truck the pass. side hub was destroyed. the guy said that his brother only locked it in halfway one day. i put a new set of warn hubs on it and have used the 4wd a couple times. it seemed to work fine, but i can't tell if that wheel is spinning.
when you spin the shaft either the other shaft will spin our your front drive shaft will spin, if there is something wrong with that side then when you put it in 4 wheel drive neither of the front tires will spin unless you have a locker up front and then atleast one tire will turn if the other is broken.
This may be a little difficult for you, but it would help to find your problem. Put your truck in four whell drive with hubs locked. Then lift all four wheels from the ground. (Lift if you have on, or 4 jack stands if you are like me.) With the moter off, turn one of the front wheels by hand, listening to what kind of noise the hubs make. Note: if all four wheels turn at the same time then you have true four wheel drive. If only the wheel that you are turning spins and nothing happens to anything else then you will need to look at that hub. what you should expext to see is the wheel on the far corner, (for example, if you are turning the front passanger side you should also see the rear driverside turn the same direction.) to turn as well. If you turn one wheel and you dont see any movement and hear a nasty noise in the diff case, the the hub is more then likely ok but the diff is FUBARED. Try this out and let us know what happened. Thanks
Brad
well i haven't tried puttin the whole truck on jackstands, however the other day i was messing around and when i turned the front shaft both steering knuckles turn fine. i put a screwdriver in one side and the other side still turned fine. i might take the cover off the front diff tonight and take a look.
omg, nothing is wrong with it, just leave it alone. Thats how an open differential works, applies to most torque to the tire with the least traction, if they both have to same amount of traction both will spin, if one is on hard ground and the other on soft the one on soft will spin
Yeah, you're getting some really inaccurate advice in my opinion.
Your front differential is almost certainly fine. I would not worry about it. You may have a hub that's not unlocking or maybe you don't.
Lock the side that's spinning freely and then try to turn the driveshaft. If it won't turn, then the other hub is locked up on you. I definitely wouldn't bother taking it to a shop. It's not hard at all to pull the hub, you just have to know how to do it. You'll need snap ring pliers and a set of picks - but I've done it with a small alan wrench and a pocketknife.
first off i appreicate all of your opinons. I put the hubs on myself about 6 months ago so i am sure they are good the only thing i can't figure out is just now they was both spinning freely, although yesterday just the one was. i'm just going to forget about because its kinda got me stumped and its too hot outside today to mess with it.
