i need some advice for a muffler for my 300-6 in my 85. i'm getting hedman headers and i want it to have a deep sound all the time. if i get it straight piped would that sound good. or a flowmaster? and which would sound better dual or single?
There are tons of threads on this subject, just do a search. I'm fairly certain that there is a post on this just a couple threads down.
Aside from that, i'm not sure what will give you that "deep" sound at all times and rpms, but remember it is a six, its not going to sound like a v8 pretty much no matter what you do with it.
i run hedmen headers, mangaflow cat and about 3 foot of pipe. its not bad, but its not deep like a v-8. it is very loud @ WOT and sounds unique which is what i like.
magnaflow muffler with headers dont cut it IMO, but it may have been just my experience. flowmasters sound ok at idle but get raspy and ricey.
I have the hedman header. 2.5 inch pipe that goes 2-1 after the tranny, through one 40 series flow, over the axle and it stops about 5 inches after it levels out after the axle. It has a very deep (for a 6) rumble at lower rpms. and sounds like a straight pipe semi at wot, have fun
I have an 81 flatbed with 2.5" pipe to a 40 series flowmaster with 3" from there it turns up thru the flatbed and stops just above the cab.It has an interesting sound almost like a diesel,by the way the truck was like this when I got it.
i had a truck with efi manifolds and a 4 bbl intake. i y'ed it back into a 3 inch banks muffler with dual pass. sidepipes. i had no cat. it sounded great. here is a clip of it when the motor had single exhaust manifold and 1 bbl. http://exhaustsoundclips.com/phpbb2/...=2&file_id=251
As much as i like to talk about my exhaust i will tell you that this have been discused many times. I have a 2 inch straigh pipe on my truck just one pipe that i y of after the axle.(its home made) i toke a large piece of galvanized 2'' pipe and bent it to exit where i wanted it to. i then cut a hole in the pipe buted the other pipe up to it. i welded it just like that. I left it like that for about a week. The truck had lots of pop and crackle but not a lot of rumble when you lug it or wanted a good rumb when it was idling so i went and bought a set of 3'' tips 24'' long. It changed the sound so much. It has a nice rumble idealing and when i lug it. I can still make it pop by down shifting. When i rack the pipes it has a nice slap to the exhaust. I believe its the best sounding 300 i have ever heard! love it. I have a pic in my gallery of one of my tips its a little blurry but you get an idea. Its under my truck gallery.
By the way I was pulled over for not having a mufler! Now it has a muffler.
Ive got an 80 f100 with the stock carb setup and exhaust system, the only difference is that the guy I got the truck from put a metal bar through the cat. It sounds great, has a rumbling at idle(not like a v8 but pretty nice) and at wot you know its coming. I'll have to check but he might have even put the bar throught the muffler, im not sure, but it sounds great anyway.
I have a 4 bbl, with Heddman headers, dual outlet, wrapped with header wrap, (makes a BIG difference in under the hood heat) and those feed into glass packs one out the drivers, one out the pass, has a very unique sound, old guys like the sound, I like the sound, used to be a big thing in the midwest where I grew up, you split the exhaust to match the firing order, 1,5,3,6,2,4 1,3,2 go to one side, 5,6,4 go to the other, sounds great. Of course being a 66, she doesn't have to go to the bulls..t smog test. The headers are race headers, dual outlet, really cool!
Yep, heard pros an cons of it, however, having had a few 6's and having headers on them, in California (no salt on the roads/dry climate), they last about the same. I prefer the wrap for the awesome heat it keeps out of the engine bay, and for my sensitive digits that always seems to come in contact with a nicely heated metal tube. That wrap has saved my fingers/hands numerous times, and looks a lot cleaner, and is a lot cheaper than ceramic coating and having had ceramic, once it gets dinged @#$%^&* So yeah maybe it does rot a smidgen quicker, but I'm ok with that!
