Clutch Chadder

I've just been wondering this. I have a 2000 Mazda B3000 and when the RPM's are low and I'm in gear I get bad clutch chadder, past 1200 RPM or so it goes away.

Recently the shifter doesnt like 2nd gear at times. Maybe 1 in 100 or so. The *not so intelegent* guy who owned the truck before me thought the correct way to fix a vacume leak causing an idle problem was to drag the clutch in traffic. I fixed the vacume leak (was a simple as a broken hose clamp on the brake's vacume booster) but now the clutch is almost on its last leg (I'm going to give it another 7,000-10,000 miles or untill shifting becomes a big problem).

Could it be a near worn out clutch also causing the chaddering?

Just wondering.

You might want to search the forum for cluch chatter. While there are other reasons and more qualified members who may comment, depending on the mileage or usage, a common reason for shuddering or chattering of the clutch is that the flywheel needs resurfaced. Probably one of those "while you are at it you might as well also do" situations. Usually its the other way around, if you are replacing the clutch you are throwing away money if you don't resurface the flywheel, from what I understand.

A clutch shudder probably means the flywheel DOES need to be resurfaced, however, if you are having shifting problems they are not likely related to the clutch unless it is dragging, which is not a sign of a worn out clutch disc. If you can do it yourself a clutch job is relatively inexpensive, and it sounds like you could use one just to cure the "chatter". Out of curiosity, are you talking a shuddering vibration when slipping the clutch taking off, or are you talking about a noise when your foot is off the clutch at very low rpms? The latter is not at all a sign of a worn disc, clarification would be good.

The later, very low rpms with my foot off of the clutch.

OK, my ideas were totally off then. I hate to say I don't know, but I don't. My '02 4.6l 5spd makes the same noise, in fact at low rpms most manuals I've driven make a "chattering" sound when lugging. My '85 made the same noise when idleing in neutral with the clutch out, it just remained, got no better no worse. I'm at a loss for what to tell you, but I doubt it's related to the shifting problem. Has that gotten worse since you've owned it? These Mazda transmissions are quirky, and second seems to be their least favorite gear. I would do a trans service (drain and refill with mercon) and just drive it, be in tune to any change in driveability, if it stays the same I would venture a guess it's nothing to worry about.

Hasnt gotten any worse since I got it. I was just wondering what it could be.

It only doesnt like 2nd on rare occasions, and it usually goes all of the way in on 2nd try. I try to conserve my clutch though, I dont use it upshifting from 3rd to 4th and 5th and downshifting from 5th to 4th. I also rev match when down shifting to help out the syncros.

At around 70k miles, I put Mobil 1 synthetic atf in my trans, and it shifts a lot better now - not so 'muddy' when engaging the gears.

I'm guessing that the chatter at low rpm is the clutch disc springs or play in the spline or a combination.

Of course, the previous owner's habit of slipping the clutch in traffic can create a lot of heat quickly, which can glaze the clutch disk, warp the flywheel and/or pressure plate, anneal the clutch springs, etc., so a new clutch is a good idea as soon as you can fund it.

Ive been driving the truck for over a year with out clutch problems except when towing (doesnt like pulling a 19' boat fully loaded with gas and gear up a ramp with a #1 grade. Even with the 4.10's)
