Low Fuel Light Question.

Have an 03 Expy, I always keep my tank full, but I'm curious how many gallons of fuel is in the tank when the low fuel light comes on??

I have never seen the light :S
my XP has a problem since I bought it.. I think the sending unit, well at least that is what I have been told :S
It says that it is still 1/4 gas left in the tank, buy its completely empty, I have been pushing it about 3 times.. 2 of those in the freeway

Ibarria, Almost definitely the sending unit. Had the same problem in another life when I owned a Ch**y. Unfortunately a "drop the gas tank" job. Luckily, mine was still under warranty.

Pappyball, I have never completely run out, but in my 2001, there are roughly 3-5 gallons left when the fuel light first comes on. Of course, that depends on if I parked my truck on an incline or not...

It really doesn't take just a whole lot of skill, but it's just a pain in the neck, that's all. I would HIGHLY recommend doing it on an empty tank if at all possible, unless you like the thought of trying to hold up a gas tank while it's full of gas. Then you get to find out how much you can bench press.

There should be a couple of strap-like hangers holding the tank up to the underside of your truck, if I remember correctly. You just unbolt those after you've disconnected the line from your fuel door, as well as your main fuel line, and drop the tank down. It would be wise to relieve your fuel pressure and disconnect your battery before you start.

It's much easier if you have a helper, but I've done it by myself as well. Once I had to do it outside at night with my wife holding a shop light for me and it took me a couple of hours to drop the tank, replace ANOTHER chevy fuel pump, and reconnect everything.

Oh, and you'll probably want to jack the rear of your truck up a tad to give you some extra space. Don't forget jack stands!
