I have a 98 Explorer Sport with a manual transmission. The parking brake has faded out and is now pretty much nonexistent. I cannot seem to figure out how to adjust it. On other cars, it seems like all you have to do is crawl underneath and do some tightening. How do I do this on my Explorer?
You have a four wheel disc setup, but behind the rear rotors is a drum surface with small brake shoes that are used only for the parking brake. Now you normally shouldn't have to adjust this. What happens is the shoes separate from the brackets and disintegrate, hence the no parking brakes.
Remove the rear calipers... remove the rear rotors, and you'll see what i mean. Install new parking brake shoes but do not turn the adjusters unless the rotor will not reinstall. You can adjust them just like rear drum brakes but you want them adjusted so that the shoes do not contact the drum surface at all unless you press down on the parking brake.
