Old news- that's a 2002/2003 model. Due to the design of that truck, the results would have been very different if the door was on it. I'd like to see what something like a Saturn does in that style test.
WOW that scared me there for a minute before I noticed that the article is from 2002 before the new body came out. The new frames and cabs are much stronger than the previous generation (97-03). There still isn't an excuse for why ford didn't take care of the problem earlier before 04.
Yes ford sure has some disastrous snafu's in its recent history. You have the exploding Pintos, the roll-over Eploders, the fire-bomb f150's, and others produced with the junk cruise control cut off switch. And the last generation f150's that lacked structural integrity during a crash. Ford would like everyone to forget all its deadly design / bean counting caused failures. Hence the marketing campaign where Jr keeps referring to Volvo, a company that had a good safety rating for its cars and trucks.
While the Explorers of previous generation where slim profiled creating a roll over potential, the main reason was the Firestone tires made at the Decatur plant. The redesign of that truck addressed the width issue.
From personal experience. I saw an 05 4dr on a flat bed at a local truck stop. This truck was crushed from behind from a tractor trailor and forced into a van. The front and back looked like an accordian while the cab looked untouched. The roofs, doors and carriage have been reinforced since the 2002 models. That is the reason I waited untill ford worked out the kinks. Literally. I feel safe enough to drive my family in any day.
