Old Shock Disposal

What do you do with an old set of shocks? I see they carry a warning about heating and opening becuase of the gas charge. If I throw them out, could they explode in the trash truck? Shouldn't all that metal be recycled somehow?

I always just throw my old shocks away. I've never heard of doing anything different either.

put them in the trash can. if they do get crushed, its only nitrogen.
