Difference from 99 to 02 7.3

Hey first post here! Nice to meet you all. My question, what's the difference in 7.3's from 99 to say 02. My buddy has a 99 and if he's sitting next to me I can't even hear my truck. His wife hates his truck because it's too loud but doesn't mind mine. Huge difference in engine noise, what did Ford change, can we retro the 02 parts on his truck? His truck is stock, mine has 5" flopro exhaust turbo back(love it sounds like big rig not obscenely loud), hypertech tuner stage 3, wicked wheel, banks big head, cold air intake. His is still louder than mine,what gives? Even in my truck running with windows up I can hear his.Thanks all, look forward to more(shorter,sorry)posts. LONG LIVE THE POWERSTROKE!!!!!!!!!!!

the only difference i know of engine wise is in the 99 and 2000 they have forged connecting rods and 2001 and later they have powdered metal rods. i dont know if that has anything to do with noise but i know the programming in the computers has been changed a lot so maybe there is a small difference in timing .

'99 7.3 creates 235 hp

'02 7.3 creates 275 hp

I don't know all the differences, but they're not the same engine.

The early 99 had a different turbo and injectors.

I've had a 99 for 1 and 1/2 years and this month just bought a 2001 (wanted to go to a crew cab setup). My whole family noticed immediately that the 2001 was quieter than the 99. My 2001 also has the Hypertech programmer. It seems to me that it does make a difference in noise level between the stock and Stage 3 settings, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

If his 99 is that loud, maybe there is somehting wrong with it. One thing to check for is that that the torque converter isn't damaged. Mine was REALLY loud when I first bought it and it turned out that something had broken off inside the torque converter. Expensive fix but made the truck much quieter...not as quiet as my 2001, though!

Wildturkey,

Did the torque converter fix get you any beter performance or did it only help with the noise? My 99 is much louder than my buddies '03 7.3 and my other buddies '02, but If the TC only helps with noise I will pass.

I didn't really notice any difference in performance, but I did not have the truck for very long when I fixed it. Here is a post I made about the torque converter issue:
