ok took the truck out to test it after i got the tranny fluid level about where it should be. it was running fine at first but after i got on the freeway it dies on me. i pulled over got it started and it died again about a mile later when i was getting off the freeway. i got it started before it stopped this time, i pulled into a parking lot and let it idle for a while and it was doing just fine with that. tranny fluid level was just fine. i let it idle for a bit to try and recover some battery power. i looked at the clear fuel line going to the water seperator and it had a lot of bubles going threw it, i thought it was after the fuel system and maby it was still bleeding it out. it went around the parking lot just fine so i tried to get it home. it died three times on the freeway which was a total of about 1 1/2 miles maby 2 i switched to the rear tank just as i was pulling off thought maby it was on empty and the gauge was wrong it died a few more time while i was heading home but not as much as it was. i pulled into a neiborhood when it died again got it restarted and let it idle for a bit. while it was doing that i looked under the hood for there were a lot less bubles in the fuel line and i followed the lines and it is before the injection system. so maby the front tank was empty. i got the truck to a chevron without much problem. filled up both tanks for a total of about 12 gallons so i wasnt sucking an empty tank. i also got a good woosh of air and a white cloud coming out of the rear tank when i opened the cap for it. got it home it died a few more times, i could not seee any more bubles in the line exept for a few small ones that were not moving anywhere. after i shut off the truck i got a air hissing noise coming from around the rear tank. im going to go back out and look for possible air leaks but wanted some advice if this was an air buble problem and where to look for possible problems. also the engine revs just fine when i step on it in park.
If you got a whoosh of air out of the rear tank, it sounds like your vent tube may be clogged. I would also do a lift pump check to see if it is supplying the IP with fuel.
i have poked the check valve in the fuel filter its squirting fuel out. i remember someone saying that it should squirt all the way across the engine bay. whats a good way to check it?
If your vent tube on the tank is blocked you will build up a vacuum in the tank. Even if your transfer pump is working it will run out of fuel while driving. At idle or just reving the engine you are using such a small amount of fuel that it will run OK.
Remove the schrader valve on the fuel filter.
Get a piece of hose that fits over the schrader valve stem and a fuel pressure gauge.
Cranking the engine over should show about 5 to 7 PSI pressure.
Then remove the gauge and route the hose into a container.
You should also get 1/3 pint or more fuel in 10 seconds of cranking the engine over.
If the transfer pump fails either test, replace it.
Some of the replacement pumps have an almost straight arm, be sure to read and follow the installation directions or the pump will be damaged.
