tranny questions

ok i have a c6 in my truck not to happy with it but it also might be dieing, going to poke at it some more today to try and find out exactly. im hopeing i can get it to work proper. anyway whether its dieing or not i would like to eventually put a manual into this thing. i have head several options t18, t19 NP435. i would prefer a 5 speed it it could be made to fit but i'll stick with whats avalable. so are these first three trannys going to fit the c6 bellhousing? do i have to get a fifferent bellhousing to make them fit? and wouldthere need to be and modifications to the driveline? shorter/longer?

The bell housing is part of the case on a C6, so you will need get a diesel bell if you want to change it to anything else.

A ZF5 Speed from behind anything from 87 IDI to a 97 Powestroke will mount right up if you get the bell, also a ZF6 will mount up from up to a 2003 Powerstroke 7.3.

Thing to watch out for on the newer than 91 trannies is the lack of speedo hole...

If you mostly drive around town or pull heavy loads , I would go with the 4speed . It is almost bullet-proof . The clutch set-up is also a lot cheaper .

The 5speed is nice on the highway , but by the time I was through working out all the bugs , I spent a small fortune on it . You either have to use a dual-mass flywheel or a covertion kit .I tried a duall-mass first , Then I went with the LUK clutch kit which was around $1000 . The tranny cost me another $1000 . My wife's truck had the c6 in it , and when it went out I put in the 5speed . I put the 5speed in hers because it is mostly used at highway speeds , which is usually the highest speed she can get away with...lol. She loves the 5speed vs her c6 or my 4speed . I perfer the 4speed due to the heavy loads I pull and it has proven very durable .

i dont plan on pulling heavy loads to often the only thing i ever need to pull is a car and most of my cars are fairly light 2800 or less. i do a lot of freeway driving so the 5 speed would be nice. but it would mostly be what i can get into it easily. what are the 5 speed tranny avalable? is the zf the 5 speed? and why does a clutch for it cost so much? besides the cost of the tranny and clutch i would not think theres much else to put in it, besides the clutch pedal asembly. and so most any of the diesel tranny bellhousing will bolt up to the 6.9? and the avalable trannys?

Zf is the 5 speeds available through the 90's, then the 6 speeds are also of ZF designation. The dual mass was designed to reduce the gear noise the ZF's get from the diesel vibration. If you look around enough, you can find the LuK kits for less than that, the friend I helped change his 94 from DMF to SMF gave $400 for it new from a supplier.

they will fit up to the block, but keep in mind the speedo drive issue, the 92 I have has the casting, but was never drilled for the speedo hole. Crossmember may need some work to make it all fit as well.

I can't say that theey are or not, but my guess would be no, because the simple fact, why would they be? No need as the speedo is reading the rear axle... the 6 speeds don't even have the casting mark.

The ZF transmission is both a transmission with an integral bell housing.
So you must find a diesel ZF transmission. The gasoline powered versions will not bolt up to the diesel engine.

The only transmission behind a diesel that had a bell housing was the T 19.

About the only option for a speedometer is to swap in a 92 or later rear axle and swap in an electronic speedometer if your truck is 2 wheel drive.
4x4 trucks have the speedometer driven off the transfer case output shaft.

Or, put a Gear Vendor behind the C6, like I did. And about the Speedo, you could get a GPS unit. However more important than the Speedo is the Odometer.

My 92 reads off the rear axle, so I didn't do a thing...
