my 65 was wrecked friday night. not totalled though, just marred up.
I was driving down the road, and heard this extremely loud music blairing from a house, also a bunch of lights on over there. I glanced for a second, looked back at the road. Car was stopped waiting for the car ahead to turn. I hit my brakes hard, then I heard this pop. trucks brakes sort of let go. I hit the car in front of me, in turn pushing that car into the car ahead of them. I recon thats what a 4000 pound truck does when it hits a car. wasnt going all that fast, I had just went over a set of tracks.
Im not hurt, the woman in front wasnt hurt friday night, but now she is..wonder why?? sue me? yup, you know how that is. anything for a buck.
I would have posted this earlier, but I am so discusted about this.
The truck....
It already needed a passenger fender on it. but now it needs a driver fender, grille, and a bumper. grill isnt hurt all that bad, but it will be replaced eventually.
NCFirefighter came over and helped me to pull out a great deal of the damage, but this is only to help it till I get me some good body parts.
now that popping noise......seems like it came from the back and it was making a scraping noise on the way home. Brakes still worked, but not as well. visually it looks fine. pulled the front driver side hub off too, and it looks like it might be on its way out. still need to look into the other wheels.
My heart goes out to you... I think I'm having sympathy pains! the woman who is "hurt"... was she the one you hit or was she in the very front? I could be wrong but I believe that you are only responsible for the one YOU hit. I got sandwiched one time and I had to pay for the car in front of me... something about maintaining safe distance. Anyway, glad everybody walked and/or drove away. Hope you get her fixed soon!
I am so sorry to hear that. I am glad you are not hurt!
That pop was probably a rubber brake line letting go. Even Ford engineering isn't good enough to prevent 40 year old rubber lines from letting go. There are 3, two in the front, and one in the rear. I recommend you replace them all before you go out driving it again.
4 wheel discs aren't really necessary, and in this case, could easily have aggravated the results. Rear drums brakes are very suited to the truck, especially if you upgrade to the larger 3 inch wide shoes and drums found on '73 and later trucks. Cheaper as an upgrade, too.
Also, I recently bought a '65 with lots of spare body parts, grills and all. If Bit doesn't have what you need, let me know and I can help out. I am still waiting for that truck with the extra parts to be delivered, so I don't know exactly what all extra I got, but I am told it has duplicates of a lot of front body parts.
thanks guys...its rough to say the least. hard to look at her, because after I got my grill and wheels (except for one) painted up, she was starting to look cleaner. I still need to post those piccy's in the gallery btw....made a world of difference not having that rusty grill and wheels.
i might be paying bit little a visit real soon, and hes pretty close to me. I will have to get the street address to his shop. probly in the phonebook. iv heard from locals that he is sometimes hard to catch at the shop which is why I have not went there already.
banjopicker, I will look under her as soon as I can. I really want to get her up and on the road asap. I will deffinately let you all know the status of the truck and any parts I have found or not. i will look into that 3 inch conversion on the back, but still think i want to go with front disk.
Desertwest, I was the last in line, or the first to hit. insurance comp told me already im pretty much at fault for the whole kit and caboodle. the car in the front of me is the one with that lady that got hurt, delayed reaction of course. would not be suprised if they total that one out. I made it into a chrysler sandwich. I imagine she is sore, but not hurt! she was walking around, not limping, not complaining, nothing to indicate pain at all.
You know I did a similar thing when I was stationed in New Orleans. Some jack hole cut in front of me and I stomped on the brakes so hard I broke the master cylinder pushrod. Same thing happened to me that is happening to you. The guy walked out of his truck and started yellig and hollerin about how unsafe my driving was. Funny thing is that he at fault according to the cop but because he was rearended I ended up paying his "pain and suffering". Then to top that off he was trying to get more money for previous damage to the back of his car. Thankfully I drive around with a digital camera that captured all the rust from the old wreck. Good news, I only had to rub his paint off my bumper.
ohh, I imagine that woman is sore. good thing I have insurance..
anyway, looking past that; what happens will happen reguardless.
airharley, i think we should all carry a camera. about my camera. all the pics I take now are with my cell phone, it does great quality shots, almost as good as my digital. all the ones in my gallery were taken with my cell. I used to carry a digital with me as well, but since i got this phone, with a 128 memory stick in it, I really dont need to carry the digi camera anymore as i always always have my cell with me..lol. It takes a 1280X1024 @ 1.3 megapixel. ave filesize 330k. not for an artist or photagrapher, but for the quick silly pic, or documentation, perfect fit. there was no prior damage to that car though.
I need to get under the truck and look around at master cyl and all that other crap that can go wrong. truck wont be drove again untill i know my brakes are 100%. thats fur sure. I dont want to risk hurting someone else or myself no matter how much I love driving my truck.
i recon the work I was planning for this winter just got fast forwarded a few months, and a few more bucks.
I know one thing......these old trucks really are tough.. no more than it did to my truck versus what it did to the other 2. its something to think about.
thanks again for the support. its a true heart breaker, but i will not lose intrest in my slick. just makes me want to fix her even more.
Rick
looking at your pictures it almost apears as if those drums were turned down past legel measurements.
But the truck really doesn't look that bad. Did you get pictures of the other guy?
When mine got hit the only re-usable part of the front end was the right front fender. everything else had to be replaced. I only have hard copy pictures and will have to scan them to put into my gallery.
I gues now is the time for that disc brake upgrade..
Sorry to hear that. Many years ago when I was in my early 20's I wasn't paying real good attention heading to work. Hey it was early in the morning and I was hung over from the night before. I rearended an old lady in a cutlass with my pos tempo. Good thing my little unibody was taking on a full frame, big steel bumper car. Mine got the worse of the damage. The cutlass only got a small buckle in one quarter. I put my bottom teeth through my lip and was pooling blood in my hand as this ole bat was asking me a ton of questions. She sure seemed fine then. I said can't you just wait for the cops to get here. I was sitting in the ambulance to get bandaged up and when I come out hear the old bat say "ohh my neck" to the cop. What a beeotch, my how things change. Probably was disappointed I was a poor young kid at the time and made $6/hr and didn't own much of anything. Can't get blood from a stone.Went to get stiched up looking like a dork with a big bandage wrapped around my whole head and chin, only way they could bandage it good. A friend and coworker drove me to the hospital laughing his **** off at me. Good thing the cop didn't know my back brakes were plugged off on the car. If you have injurys like your back or neck, they usually don't show up till a day or two later like jd said. Probably sees her ticket out of working and earning an honest buck. Glad to hear your alright, the truck can be fixed.
yup kenseth, she will be fixed too. really wanting to get some disk brakes for it now..lol at the moment (until this week coming up) i have been on short time at work, only getting in 20 to 30 hours a week for the last few, so I had to put her on the back burner for a few weeks, but I still go and start her up every couple days.
Hate that about your lip, I know that was bad, it hurts bad enough just biting a lip, much less going through it.
Jon , I did not get any pictures because my camera phone dont really take good pics if its the slightest bit dark, but you can rest assured, I will get me a cheap digital cam to keep in all my drivers from now on.
I looked at your gallery, wow, i know that had to hurt. i hate seeing a slick all banged up like that. yours certainly got hurt worse than mine did though. the truck in those pics the same one you driving now? I really cant wait to start putting good parts back on my old girl. i love that truck.
