With the converter out, take a look into the area the converter hub goes and see what it looks like in there. You could maybe put a screw driver in to see if it wiggles around. Been a while since I monkeyed around with one, so have to try and remeber all this.. I may have to check out the C6 I have to get an idea of what to say... I'd hate to pull the pump out and not be the problem. Got another question, by any chance did you have the filter out of the trans? I made a whoops before, forgot to tighten up the bolts, and it was sucking air...
On all trans replacement, there must be sufficient ATF to show on the stick. When the engine is started, shift from fwd to reverse several times until the trans fills all the holes and evacuates the air. Once you have gears on line, re check the fluid level......
Does not look good at all!!Looking closer I believe the dammage is done! A lot of metal filings both on the shaft and in the converter. I have a spare C6 that has a 3rd. shift problem, will try to install it correctly this time, any pointers?
The rear shaft is held in by a snap ring, which means the trans needs to be taken apart to get to it. Another option you have is to pull the pump out. I would recommend getting a video or book on rebuilkding automatic transmissions so you know more what is going on. Luckily, C6's are easy to do, but since noone can just come over and show you how to do it, it is best to have the material to refer to for your first time. To get the pump out is easy, it's going back together that is a little tougher, but not bad, just when you don't fully understand, it can be pretty intimidating. My suggestion, if the 4wd trans was fine other than this little oops, I would just switch pumps. To get the pump out, you undo all the bolts on the front of the trans. I don't recall if the C6's have the two threaded holes or not, so you'll have to take a look for me. When tou take out the bolts, there should be two of the holes that have some threads in them, if they did this. Then you need a slide hammer to pull it, otherwise there is a special tool that will be needed, but for now I'll go on... The slide hammer is nothing more than a weight on a shaft that has 3/8" threads on it. Mine actually was one of those chepo body repair hammers that you put the screw in the end of, which was screwed into the body panel you would be pulling. If you have these threaded holes, you use the slide hammer to pull the pump, if not, a puller that pulls on the converter splines while pushing on the input shaft is needed. BUt the pump will slide out at this point, but My recommendation is to have the trans standing on it's tail somehow if you can. I realize you don't have a holding fixture for it, so if you can find another way, it would work. If you have some fabrication ability, you can make a clamp. Those two round castings on each side of the trans case are where the clamp mounts to, then it makes a "C" around the top of the trans. I made one out of C channel and round rod to put on my engine stand. I may have to get a pic of it if you don't quite follow what I mean.I'll also have to look and see if I can find a book with instructions on the pump removal and installation so I could email those to you. It'll be later today before I can do anything, as I have to be in class all day...
Great!! I was also thinking along the line of just changing the pump. I have a sort of keg I can slide the C6 into so it will point straight up, I am pretty good at welding so I think I could make some kind of a puller to get the pump out. Will be waiting for your instructions for the rest of the operation.
Do not use the convertor you took a picture of.
A thrust washer is broken and fallen out of place.
That is where the marks on the stator support came from.
You need to be concerned about the pump gears which are inside the pump and driven by 2 flats on the convertor.
Upon looking at the pics, I have a question... where's the governor on the 4wd trans? The aluminum piece on the back of the plate on the 2wd trans, it should be there, without it, you will have problems... like no shift, no pressure...
