I have a 223 in my truck and when it warms up the lifter get really noisy. Do they just need to be adjusted or could this be a sign of a bigger problem? Thanks for your help!!
61 F100: I must confess I don't know the 223 engine, but I do know about lifters.
First thing I check is are your lifters adjustable? If so, then Yes, it sounds as though you need to adjust them.
Second thing I check is the oil, is it the right viscosity? Clogged filter? Filthy interior of the engine, which MIGHT (only might) mean clogged passageways? This will have less effect on adjustable valves which have solid lifters than on non-adjustable, which have hydraulic lifters, of course.
I really need more info before I can help out further. I'm sure though that others here can!
