7.3L just quit

Hey guys!! Any help you have will be greatly appreciated. Yesterday I was going down the road and my truck (2000 F250 7.3L diesel) just quit running and would not restart. I let it sit for a couple of hours and it started up again but I didn't let it run very long. Went out this morning and crunk it up and let it idle. It idled for about 5 minutes and quit again. Took a couple of tries to get it to start again but would only start and run if I depressed the accelerator. Let off the accelerator and it quit again. Now it will not start at all. No service or warning lights came on. The fuel pump is spinning up and pressurizing the system and the batteries are clean with good contact. I haven't gone to the fuel filter yet as I have never known a fuel filter to make an engine stop all of a sudden. What might be some other suggestions. Thanks!!!

Rex

Does the motor turn over and the truck wont start? If the motor wont turn over it sounds like the Cam Positioning Sensor. Mine went out once and it was like I had power and everything was normal. I plugged a code reader in to it and got no codes either. Dealer picked it up and said the cam pos. sensor went out. They also told me some times it's sudden and some times it acts up.

There are several posts about them. They look easy enough to change.

did you go over to the 7.3 forum and research the CPS symptoms? that is my diagnosis. buy two, keep one in the glove box with a 10mm socket incase this happens again, you wont be stranded.

All of what happened to you is exactly what happened to me. It is highly possible it is your cam positioning sensor. It is easy to change but the codes must be reset. As suggested, buy two and keep an extra. They cost about $125.

Thank you, much appreciated.

I bought mine at Ford where I had the work done. I get a discount there and thought I was getting a good price. I didn't price it anywhere else.

Thanks guys!! That was it. I pulled the old CPS, installed the new one and she fired right up. The sad thing is that while I was at the dealership they said that this is very common for the 7.3L and that they had changed 6 of them this past week. Sounds like Ford knows it is a problem. Might be worth writing a letter due to the hazardous nature of the problem while traveling at high speeds. Thanks again.

Am I understanding you right? When your CPS went out your motor wouldn't turn over?

As I recall, I read something about a service bulletin about the cam positioning sensor. Apparently they had used an old mold or something and have since then fixed the problem. I have 120,000 on my truck and had it replaced once while it was under warrenty. I do agree with strokin_it 7.3 above because when it goes out you are screwed and dead in the water.

Ford has known about the problem for many years but hasen't fixed it. I got the same story about a lot of them they recently replaced before I brought mine in.

You may have to reset the codes or have them reset. On my 1996 Ford I just disconnected the battery for a few minutes and then reconnected it and the codes reset themselves.
