Do I have to pull the motor to change the rear main seal on an 87 5.0 in an F150

No, but you have to pull the transmission. It's a one-piece seal, so you have to remove the flywheel to get to it.

Its not a one piece. Its a two piece.

Then you have an older motor in there. Ford went to a one-piece seal in 1981 and have used them ever since.

In that case you need to drop the pan (it can usually be done with the motor still in the truck) and remove the rear main cap, and work around the crank.

No, its the original motor in the truck and it has a two piece. Thats what came out of the truck when I rebuilt the motor and no work has ever been done to the internals.

So it looked like this?

Of course this is just the cap half of the seal. Anyway, you have to drop the pan to replace a two-piece seal.

The main cap doesn't quite look like that it has different grooves. But I just went to two different auto part stores and they both told me it is a one piece seal. So I guess my gasket kit came with the wrong one and that why it is leaking. I'm pretty pissed off to say the least right now. What do I have to do to change a one piece.

Is there anyway you can show me a picture of the one piece to make sure I have the right one? Or at least a part number?

It looks just like a regular oil seal. I have a couple of Fel-Pro numbers, BS40620 gets you the standard grade seal and BS40644 gets you the premium PTFE rubber seal for about 5 bucks more. Here's a pic, although not a good one:

It fits in directly from the back which is why I said you need to pull the tranny and flywheel. I don't know how you installed your two-piece seal in the one-piece housing, if it's right in the back groove where the one-piece seal goes then you should be okay otherwise you'll be looking at dropping the pan as well.

Yeah, I got the BS 40620. Thanks for all the help. I hope all I have to do is pull the tranny.
