Putting things back together now, and I think that I may have crossed my wires. The alternator has two studs in the back, I was sure that I put them back the way they came off, but now the guage does not work. Everything else functions as it should, and the system is charging. My question is, will everything still work if I have crossed these wires, (except the guage), and, will I screw anything up if I swap sides on the studs, and will this possibly bring back the "ALT" guage?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-May-02 AT 08:09 AM (EST)]Mamdal: I don't know which alternator you've got! If it is what I think you (probably) have, yes, switching the studs will FRY the system, because one is ground and the other is hot.
Now (this will really confuse you) if the two studs are both insulated from the case of the alternator, then it MIGHT be ok for you to switch them.
Here's what I would do, but do this at your own risk, since I can't come look at it to make sure:
1. If one stud is grounded, or is part of the case, stop here. Don't try this.:-X23
2. Start the engine.
3. Remove the wires.
4. Brush one against the opposite stud. If nothing sparks, put it on.
5. Brush the other wire against the other stud. If nothing sparks,
put it on for a moment, and keep a sharp eye out on the wires for overheating. If that happens, get one wire off real fast!
Check your ammeter if everything seems OK.
Good luck, and I hope nothing gets fried!
