rough running

hi all, 69 f100 300-6 runs really good in my driveway now. in the last week i have rebuilt the carb, put a blaster2 coil on, new points, condensor. the truck still runs ok for about the first mile. then i lose all power, backfires if i coast, can't accelerate. it'll stall and not start for a minute, then will fire back up and run good for a bit. the engine has 30 000 miles on it, and has run good for years. i'm getting good spark, good fuel flow, and can't think of anything else to look for. the engine also sounds funny now, like it's firing in a tin can?
thanks

I suspect the carb is causing the problem but,

I assume you have 12 volts to the coil and not the Ford 8.5V through the ignition switch ?

How many miles on the engine ?

Is it possible the distributor shaft is worn out ? (check for movement in shaft to bushings)

30 000 miles on since rebuild. it's getting 12 volts to the coil. there is no play in the distributor that i can tell. the carb rebuild went well, the float was set correct, nothing else i could see major, i never checked the needle valve for setting, just left it the same. i can try to adjust that tonight and see.
thanks

Could be the points are burned out, check the contacts and check if they are burned.
Recheck timing after you have adjusted for points.

What is the vacuum of the engine running?
Have you replaced the fuel filter?
What is the color of the spark at the coil? Blue or Orange?

when is the last time you put a light on the timing and have you checked the vaum advance itself you can use a vacume suction tool, or you can just use a clean piece of vacum tubing and suck on the end and watch the advance under the cap to see if it moves.

Have you measured the vacuum at idle, and does it backfire out the intake or exhaust?

Does truck have a exhaust leak? or a Catalytic converter? could be plugging up.

Check engine firing order of spark plug wires.

Check engine timing,

Carburator is runnng rich, adjust fuel / air mixture screws.
Rebuild carb if necessary.

Check for vacuum leaks. cracked vacuum hoses or leaking intake gasket.

easy checks for vacuum leaks is to spray wd-40 or carb cleaner or something simmilar around vac lines and listen for a change in idle.

Not water...Use a combustible like carb cleaner ..that was already mentioned.

water doesn't burn...you need something to possbily alter the engine operation
