Olds Help Please

Hello all
I got a 95 olds 88 3800 V6 that is low on power. When you start out from a stop it is slow to accellerate then all of a sudden it will come to life and go. it has been doing this for a while but about a hour ago I was driving along at about 40 and it quit running completely. I pulled to the side of the road and then I tried to restart the car. It did fire up right away and I drove it home. I can not use a code reader on it from autozone due to it being a 95 olds I am fairly sure only the dealer can pull the codes. Or a very good shop with a good machine... Any help appreciated...

You might see if there is an OBD I reader available. I believe before 96, GM used OBD I. There should be tons of the old style code flashers out there. If you had a Chiltons or Haynes they often had a way to flash the code on the check engine light using just a paper clip.

Some of the OBD I readers I have seen are well under $50. I think Harbor Freight has one around $20-$30?

Tell us more about the maintenance history of the car. There are tons of things that could cause it to do what yours did so with what we know now, we would only be guessing.

Some guesses... fuel filter, spark plugs/cables, EGR, fuel pump, clogged cat, timing, injectors and on and on. But I think where I would look is filter, spark, EGR.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

might want to try a fuel filter first. Also, yes, you can get codes out of the OBD I's by simply shorting the diagnostic circuit through the connector under the dash. If the check engine light (amber) is not lighting, it is a waste of time. Be sure it lights when you first turn the key to run, but not started. If not,it likely is burned out or removed, but there is a remote possibility that the diagnostic function has failed, but I would highly doubt that. (if the light does not light) Plugged cats are generally the opposite, power at first, and then fall on their face when going faster.
