thanks hamberger for pointing me in the right place; it was right where you said--where the pushrod goes through the firewall. i was looking all over on the clutch side of the brake pedal, not seeing that there's a crossover tube that ends up routing the clutch to the right of the brake pedal. found the "can", so old and beat up that removing it from the pushrod was cakewalk.
now, i could just patch between the two blades on the connector and never have to worry about depressing the clutch to start it. i guess the only bad thing is that the cruise control wouldn't disengage when i pushed the clutch in--i'm guessing that's what the other two wires are that go to the switch.
