Trade 05 E350 for 2000 Excursion limited??

Hello all,

I went from my 01 F250 4x4 which I loved to a 05 E350 12 pass van with 5.4 engine because I needed more seats.....we are now a family of 7, 3 small kids, 3 adults and 1 teen.

I like the van for it's versatility and massive number of seats, but it gets worse gas mileage than my V10 did, and it's way less stable at speeds over 65 mph than my truck was.

My concerns with the X are with gas mileage and only having 8 passenger seating. How hard is 2 booster seats and a infant seat to fit and "live with" in the X?

How stable is the X at high speeds, speed limit is 70 mph in most places now. What gas mileage to expect with a V10 Excursion?

Should I buy the one I found, 2000 Excursion limited, 4x4 with V10 43k miles and original owner. I haven't seen it other than online, planning on going to see it this weekend, they guy wants $17,000 for it. I'd like to only pay $15k, but he is firm on the price. What do you think, good deal?

Tony

My opinion here :

If your gonna get a Excursion get the diesel for the mileage and longevity. You can pick up the V10's dirt cheap now cuz nobody wants them.

Fuel mileage.... diesel is more expensive but you get better mileage. Even if you get a V10 it'll get better than an under powered 5.4L.

Handling ... if you're driving a VAN the Ex will feel A LOT more stable to you.

Hope this helps some. Good luck.

I wish yall would stop bagging on the V10. I have read plenty of posts where diesel guys are getting 14mpg, EMPTY. Guess what, I get 14mpg on a regular basis. I have gotten as high as 16.2mpg.

Anyways Tony1790, you owned a V10. You know what that motor is all about. I have a distrust for diesels. I have been standed many times driving a diesel at work, and from my signature you can probably figure out how bad that is.

Tony1790,

Everyone has their own opinion on what type of car, truck, or suv they drive. As for me I have a 2000 X Ltd 4x4 diesel, and I couldn't be happier! I have filled it a many times with 8-9 people. It rides great and I have never had any complaints from the pax. Also with the diesel I average 19-23 HWY and 11-14 CITY. If pulling a trailer (3k) milage will drop a little. I have driven a Econoline van for about 5 years from a previous job and the handling is a little rough compaired to the X, there is a lot more body sway, especially at higher speeds (60-75). MadMedic, does have a point about getting stranded, but that goes for any vehicle that you drive. Having a deisel or gasser is to each own individual. Keeping up with maint. is the key point of any vehcile and knowing the little tricks and performance knowledge will prevent anyone from getting stranded constanly. Good luck with your decision as you will have the best answer for your family's future ride.

Thanks all for the replies, I've never owned a Diesel, I have owned a V10 prior to this 5.4liter that I'm driving now. I guess the primary concern is the swaying that the Econoline does at higher speeds, scares the crap out of me. Easy answer is to not drive fast, but when the speed limit is 70, it's hard not to go at least the speed limit.

The second is gas mileage, I only got 13.3 to 14.45 mpg on the first trip with only 4 people in the van. My F250 with V10 would consistently get 14 to 15 mpg on trips and was very steady. The other bad thing, is that I have one of the "within tolerance" oil burning V8's, it uses about 1 quart every 2k miles. Of course that is within Ford's tolerance, but it's still crap, I've never owned a new vehicle that burns oil and that's considered ok.

Well I'll see what I can find in the way of the Excursion, it's hard for me to go Diesel as a) I've never been an oil burner b) the price of Diesel is very much higher than gas, so there is no mpg savings. c) The V10 should be a fine motor for what I need it to do.

Any thoughts on the X that I'm looking at? Deal or too high? 2000 limited 4x4 with V10 and 43k miles on it. Seems like a good deal, the year 2000 has the smaller V10 but I think that'll put less stress on the tranny which hopefully should last longer.

Earlier this year I bought a 2000 X 4x4 V10 with 83,000 miles. Its an XLT but has leather and 6 disc changer, a PS2 and two flip down screens. I paid $13,900. So the one you are looking at with half as many miles and for 17 isnt bad at all, Id jump on it.

I've had my V-10 for a year now and been cruising at 85 several times, midrange torque is amazing. Truck is stable as can be expected in a straight line. I mean, you never forget you're in an X, so your driving behaviour will already be changed for the special needs of so large a truck, and it is a comfy cruiser at higher speeds.

My 2000 had 95,000 miles on it when we bought it for $13000 last year, a great price at the time. It's been reliable as can be, if a bit more expensive to maintain than I expected. I did spend $1800 upgrading the brakes and am very happy with that investment. Make sure the door actuators are replaced. All five of them.

We've hit 17 mpg cruising on flat land at 55. 16 is more likely. Mpg barely changes when cruisng, regardless of payload. I get 15.5mpg at 60 mph with 2000 lbs in the back.

Our kids are in two boosters, and the middle row will easily hold a infant seat between them. My five year old can do the seatbelts herself and my three year old is close.

Skip the diesel, those prices are ridiculous for not that much more truck.

I think most everything has been covered. The excursion works great with the kids and their required booster and baby seat. We have three, two in booster seats and one in the babyseat. One consideration is that for some unknown reason the excursion does not come with the latches to connect the babyseat directly to the seat. I don't know if the E350 has them or not. For us, we easily fit all three in the middle seat or will go with two boosters in the back and the baby seat in the middle of the middle bench. Then we can fit one small adult in the back seat and two adults on the middle bench.

I just Bought an 01 excursion For Myself Mama, 16 year old Daughter, 12 year old son, and 5, 3, and 1 year old sons. The excursion is so big that we can fit all 3 car seats in the third row. and the 12 and 16 year old sit in the middle row with a ton of room. have room for two more people really comfortably as have 60/40/60 front bench and middle row is bench also. v10 or diesel would do better then what you are getting gas wise. Plus The Excursion looks super PIMP.

Well I sold my E350 van today, it was a great in town vehicle, but scared me and annoyed me on the highway. Either way you slice it, the van was versatile.

So now I need another Ford to buy. I'm looking at the Excursions, they seem to be in the 14k to 23k price range here.

I've found several 2000 V10 4x4 Limited's. One has 43k miles for $17,000, another has 69k miles for $16,495, and another with 82k miles for $15,300.

All 3 are neck in neck price wise, but widely spaced on mileage, the higher mileage one has dual DVD players for the kids.

How do these prices stack up? Too much, the owners say they are firm on their prices, but I'd like to pay between $12k to $15k for a lower mileage EX.

The middle priced one has new brakes, new slotted rotors, new BFG tires, New greasable ball joints, etc So sounds like the maintenance has been done.

So 1. Low mileage, good price. 2. Higher mileage, but good maintenance done. 3. Highest mileage but lowest price and DVD players.

Which one should I go with??

Thanks

Tony

Everybody likes the diesels and that's great but I spent $7,000 less on my V10 Excursion than I would have on a comparable diesel. That will but a lot of gasoline for the 1 or 2 MPG I lose with the V10. I have managed to squeeze 18 MPG out of my Excursion. That's more than a lot of the 6.0 diesels get.

Tony, keep looking those prices are too high (for the snowy upper midwest, anyway).

If those prices are firm and not from dealerships, keep going over Autotrader till you find a dealer willing to do whatever to get one off his lot. That's what we did last year when gas hit $3 a gallon and we eventually came across one willing to compromise. You may have to travel some if you're not in a large metro area, but with most large truck sales now relegated to special needs buyers, deals on early V-10s should not be too hard to come across.

Good luck

<EDIT>
A quick search of my area found 2000 and 2001 Ltd V-10s for many thousands less than what you're looking at, and these are list prices. Maybe this link will work for some examples...

my oh my, prices there are much lower than here, but this is the pacific northwest where everything is overpriced, that's the main reason that I'm planning on leaving here.

I'm thinking on flying to Chicago and driving one back.

SmokinJohn,

Why are Excursions so cheap there in the greater Chicago area?? Is it that they all rust out due to the salt on the roads or what??

There is a 2000, 4x4 limited with 5 orig miles for $17k obo....that's awesome. Many other low mileage rigs, with great deals.

There has to be a catch, a reason they are so cheap? What should I be leery of buying a vehicle from that area?

Thanks

Tony

Naw, no rust at all. Late model vehicles shouldn't have rust worries if they have even been minimally maintained with washes and waxes. We checked out 1/2 dozen X's last year within 100 miles of home, all 2000's and all over 80,000 miles, and not a speck of rust was to be seen. These were $40 - $50,000 truckes when new. I'd be suprised if you came across one with rust issues with that kind of price tag just a few years ago.

Chicago likes to think of itself as a rural town being stuck out here in the boonies with the likes of Milwaukee and such, so we buy LOTS of trucks. But when gas hits where it currently sits, we abandon the big truck in a hurry. Chicago has some of the worst daily traffic in the country and idleing in a X on the 290 coming home from work just plain sucks (tons of gas).

Drive your Excursion home from Chicago with no extra worries. Remember to horsetrade! We got $3000 off the advertised price by threatening with other X's. lol.
