well the 66 F-250 is 99.9% complete (pictures comming after the paint shop does a couple touch up items). I have tried very hard to keep the ol-gal in origional condition, with the exception of a couple things that just made good sence. But my question is about the Oil Bath air filter. I have the origional one on her, and keep it clean by changing the oil and gunk out of it every time I change the 352's oil (every 3000 mi.). What do you guys think about the filter?? the 352 has about 4,000 mi. on a complete rebuild, and although I want to keep it origional (except I did paint it red to match the paint). I do not want to be stupid.
thoughts?
Thanks
Mamdahl: I've cleaned mine every 15,000, and I use ATF instead. It helps keep the filter itself cleaner, and seems to collect a lot more crud. I don't change it as often as the engine oil, because it is not under heat and stress, so it doesn't "wear" out. It's only purpose is to trap the crud before it hits the carb, and, it does a very good job at it. Just look at the fine junk which collects in the bottom of the filter, but doesn't make it into the engine. I atribute my engine's long life to that oil bath filter. If you decide to go paper, I'll buy it from you for my boy's truck!
I would stick with the oil bath. They usually are fine, as long as not over filled with oil! The truck will look good with the original cleaner, if you upgrade, it will never have that original look, besides having to buy filters as replacements!
I converted the original oil-bath cleaner to a paper-element type, had the canister top and bottom powder coated, and only I know it's different. Now the top of the engine stays clean.
