I'm thinking about buying a used Expedtion or Navigator and have looked at a couple of vehicles that were for sale. I noticed that one had a selector switch on the dash marked "AWD--4H--4L" and another was marked "2H--AWD--4H--4L".
Is there a reference source that would indicate what engine/tranny/drive system was standard, what was optional, by model, and for what years?
Oh, yeah, and what is "AdvanceTrac"?
And finally, is there any model/year/engine/equipment one should avoid?
I'm not familiar with the difference in the 4WD systems, but I would recommend the 5.4L engine. An Expedition with the 4.6L engine does not have the required power needed to get around. With a 4.6L the transmission constantly downshifts looking for more torque, even on the smallest upslope.
The one that is marked AWD-4H-4L is a full time system meaning that on dry pavement you only would want to use AWD because there is slippage allowed between the front and rear axels. The other 2 (4H & 4L) are only to be used when there is slippage such as on dirt, gravel, snow, etc.. The system marked 2H-A4WD-4H-4L is the same except that you can prevent it from using the 4 wheel-drive by using 2H. The advance track is a full time system that senses slippage at a given wheel and uses the brakes/abs system to prevent this.
I believe that the correct answer is that units with AdvanceTrac have the awd/4h/4l selections and the units without AdvanceTrac have the 2h/a4wd/4h/4l selections.
AdvanceTrac is a sophisticated computer control system that senses wheel speeds and infers vehicle stability from that. It provides traction control by being able to apply individual brakes to not only control slip, but also theoretically improve stability by reducing spins and reducing the likelihood of rollover.
My understanding is that with AdvanceTrac, you are not able to disengage the awd, but that in either awd or a4wd, torque is only applied to the front wheels if the system detects slippage on the rear axle.
By 05, the only engine available was the 5.4, because the 4.6 is just too small as was said earlier. There is a long list of issues with the 03s (first year of the current model) but after that they seem to be fine. The only transmission that has been available is the 4spd auto, so no choices there.
I have the system marked 2H-A4WD-4H-4L. Im going to drive on the beach next week and want to know what is the best mode to use in sand????
My cousin had a button on the dash of his GMC (Denali) that would lock his hubs so all wheels were engaged. Are we able to do this? or would we have to have lockers installed?
I've driven on the beach a couple of dozen time with my Expy and have never needed to use 4wd. As long as you keep the vehicle moving, its momentum will get you thru the soft stuff. But since you have have 4wd and am eager to use it, I would just keep it in 4H and you'll be just fine.
If you do get into a situation that you are close to getting stuck, don't floor the gas spin your tires, just release as little as 15psi of pressure in your tires and rock yourself out of the soft sand.
