Has anyone ever put or herd of putting one of these on a f150? It has a new twin plenums design said to make more torque wether it does or not. I know its for 86-93 5.0 mustangs but thought it might be good for a truck too. Or should i just get the edelbrock truck intake.
I"ve not had an opportunity to play with that particular intake, however intakes like that generally do provide more torque - in the mid RPM range. The reason why is because the ID of the intake runners are slightly larger, and somewhat cone shaped so they introduce a nice, slightly higher than stock velicity going into the chambers when the valves open.
Also, the plenum is larger than stock, so to a point that helps with increasing mid-range torque.
Again, I'm not experienced with that particular intake, just sharing some of the theory.
The question I would pose to you is this though.... how much power gain might you get, versus what it costs?
You'll also find that on the stock 302 truck engines, while there are restrictions in the intake system, the exhaust side is much worse, and you probably would gain more power per dollar addressing the exhaust side.
Also keep in mind what youre vehicle is - it's likely you'd want the torque to appear at a lower RPM than in a mustang, since Mustang's generally don't have a bed full of skidoos, camping gear, or something boring like rocks.
I agree with Frederic--ask yourself (1) how much power gain versus cost and (2) where do you need your torque? Even one of the 5.0 Explorer manifolds might suit you better at a significantly lower cost. Here is a link to a discussion that some of the Mustang guys had on this manifold:
I'm not fond of BBK (BBK = Big Buncha Krap in my book). I've had quality control issues with BBK products that I have spent my hard-earned money on. And if you want to be treated like a two year old, try dealing with their customer service.
I already freed up the exhaust side. What exactly is a explorer intake its not an intake off of a ford explorer SUV is it? I seen stuff on here about explorer heads too. I do Want the torque lower in the rpm range but i dont know what is low though. Is 2500 considered low? If i got the intake or any othere intake it whouldnt be the only mod going on the truck at the time. Ive beem thinking about rebuilding and beffing up an 94 5.0 roller motor that i have and I thought that a new intake would help out along with a cam and heads, i might even do a 331 stroker but im not sure let. i think the edelbrock truck intake is just a little more money than the BBK one so would that be better for me?
The 302 is not something I'm particularly familiar with, but from what I've read and heard from friends who race the 302 (using factory parts only, though not necessarily from a particular year range) they like the Explorer heads and intake, because it's very similar to the GT40 heads/intake.
The explorer has GT40 heads and intake. The thing that concerns me about the BBK intake is how well air is delivered to the runners feeding from the throttle body side of the upper part of that manifold. It doesn't seem like the air would like to make that abrupt turn to feed those runners...
Ok thanks. Im still not sure what im going to do but im pretty sure im not going to get the BBK intake. Probaly the edelbrock truck intake or keep the stock one. But ill look into the explorer intake. Thanks for the input.
One more thing... the explorer intake is the same as what they used on the lightnings, just a 302 version. You could probably get one from the wreckers or even ebay for not too much money.
The small Windsor Explorer and GT-40/Cobra intake lowers are the same. The uppers are different. The GT-40/Lightning uppers have tubular runners while the Explorers are cast aluminum. I think the Explorer heads/manifold will shift the torque curve lower in the rpm band which is good for getting a heavy vehicle moving.
The Mustang mags have said good things about the SSI intake, however it does not make the most horsepower of the manifold available. They basically say that its torque numbers are great which would be good for a truck.,
My question is will the Explorer intake and heads work on a 93 because it has an air density or speed density sensor ( not sure wich ) instead of a mass air flow sensor
