Back up sensor question/problem

Heres one, Ever since i've owned the X (2 weeks) i noticed everytime
i back up the back sensor just makes a solid beep sound(no fast or slow beep just one long tone).. I reall dont back up much due to the way my parking is, anyway shouldnt the unit beep faster when your getting closer to something?? Is there a reset to this unit? Or could i have a bad sensor?

yes it should be faster as you get closer to an object

OK
so what causes the one annoying loud tone?? Would a dirty sensor cause it
to scream?

Backup Sensors

Howdy Joe,

IIRC (if I remember correct), solid beeps indicate you're within 12 inches from an object; object could be behind the bumper or adjacent to the truck, close enough to trigger the beep. Try backing up somewhere more open and see if the sensors still beep "like crazy". There's a button you hit to "temporarily" disable the beeping sound, just be careful and be aware you turned it off. The disabling of the sensor only works that one time backup, meaning if you engage drive again, it will start beeping again.

It could also be dirty sensors. I read on this forum that one bad sensor will affect the rest of them. I've had mine give out a solid beep when outside temperatures reach anywhere around 90 degrees and up when the bumper gets really hot or from direct sunlight.

BTW, I used to live in the Ardmore area before I moved to Delaware.

Good luck and drive safe,

Dan

Wow, I can’t imagine pulling forward into most parking spots, and backing out of many spots is even worse. I always back into parking and don’t know how I’d live without the backup system. If I go for more than a week or so without washing the car and try to back up into direct sunlight I’ll get a solid beep. But once I wash the sensors or get close enough to something that blocks the sun (like another vehicle) it returns to normal.

Mine wont stay on, just as soon as I go into reverse it goes to off. I guess I have a bad sensor. I was planning on getting one and swapping it in and out until it funtions correctly. Is this a dealer only item?? I searched the net and could not get a definitive felling. Anyone know how much a sensor cost?

Mine do the same.

You can get the sensors from any of the parts suppliers that sponsor this site. Like this site: http://tinyurl.com/nfj3b.

I think I paid about $70 for one so that I could have one good one to help diagnose the problem. It turned out not to be the sensors for me. My harness was bad. They have a tendancy to corrode like mine did.

I ended up just disconnecting the buzzer and now just make sure nothings behind me when backing up.

I had issues with back up sensor as well.. It was continually "on" when in reverse unless I flipped the dashboard switch to "off". I got lucky and had it fixed under factory warranty over 1 & 1/2 years ago... They had to pull the rear bumper to correct the issue... I am not sure what the cost was if I had to pay, but it would not have been cheap!

I gotta ask....is your tail gate up or down when your backing up?? I've found that if I have my tail gate down when I back up I get the solid beep. Guess it must be something to do with a reflection of the signal from the sensors bouncing off the tail gate, because it operates normally when the tailgate is up.

Me too!.. My sensor doesn't work, I have the off light illuminated and depressing the button won't turn the light off to indicate the system is "on". Haven't had time to look under the dash yet,, been repairing actuators and auto hubs. Jim

I've had three sensors replaced at different times and one new switch which after they replaced they figured out it was really the sensor when I couldn't shut the light or the beeper off.
Every once in a while the beeper stays on and when I clean the sensors it goes off.

I have a 2002 Excursion. My reverse sensors are working in every gear except reverse. They do beep and solid tone when something is close but not in reverse. I have to turn them off when driving.Has any one had a problem like this? Thanks Mike

Is your hitch on it? When my hitch is on, no matter what I do, it beeps because it thinks that the ***** are a solid object.
