I have an old 7.3 IDI Its a 1990 and isn't anything too special just an old plow truck. I was wondering what cheap mods or adjustments I could do to wake this high miler up?
Open up the exhaust if you are on stock. This won't do much, but it will help reduce backpressure. Is there a turbo?? If so you can turn up the fuel a little, but it is advised not the tinker with the fuel screw w/o a pyro. A better flowing airfilter may help...
Diesel secret #1, lots of cool clean air supplied to the engine.
Diesel secret #2, a big easy way to get rid of the exhaust gasses.
Are you seeing any black smoke while you drive?
No black smoke, turn the fuel up a little bit till you see just a light trail while pulling a hill.
If you see black smoke, you need more air in before it can burn any more fuel.
I'm not getting enough fuel for black smoke....yet.So I want to turn the pump up enough to get a haze while pulling or on hills? Easy enough but after turning the pump up should I get a less restrictive exhaust?(mines pretty much stock now)
Actually you should do the exhaust first.
Any intake or exhaust mods will change the amount of air going through the engine at a given RPM.
If you do the pump first, then work on the intake and exhaust, you will just wind up doing the pump again once it is getting more air.
I have been playing around with mine the last couple of months and she is really running sweet .
I installed a set of stan's headers so I could run true dual 3" exaust to my dual 3" stacks.
I also have been working on my ram-air intake . Haven't perfected it yet , but it's coming along .
The latest change is now I'm running her on Waste Cooking Oil . Runs great and smells like a fish cooker . My fuel is averaging about 30 cents a gallon . I've run it about a 1000 miles so far . Still playing with it .

How much power increase do you see from those headers? From what I hear from Stan's Headers, they say a 55 hp increase (which I kinda doubt). Basically, is the $550 worth it?
I feel like I have gained some low end . Revs up pretty quick also . Awsome sound with the open headers , it was a loud ride to the exhaust shop .
I don't know how much hp gain , but I am very happy with the power . My wife and I have almost identical trucks , hers with the 5speed and mine with the 4speed . Hers use to feel stronger than mine , but now I believe I can walk off and leave her on the short run .Now when I drive hers it feel like I'm dragging a trailer . Hers is all stock , I don't think I want hers to run too fast . She's a little heavy on the go pedal .
