I just heard that a new grade (CJ4) diesel oil will be available this fall to be used with the new USDL fuel. It will cost a little more than the CI4+ that is available now. It seems that this new grade will be the only grade recommended for use in the 2007 manufactured motors. Shell says that it is supposed to be a better oil than the CI4+.
That's true. During development it was called PC-10 and it should be available by October as noted below:
Due to the requirements of the new engines, lubricant requirements and operating conditions will significantly change in three ways:
Change #1
Higher operating temperatures as a result of increased use of EGR
Change #2
High soot levels as a result of EGR
Change #3
Compositional limits on oil (limits on sulfated ash, phosphorous, sulfur)
To account for this, CJ-4 oils will be significantly better in:
Wear control
Deposit control
Oxidation stability (resistance to breakdown at high temperatures)
Available by October of This Year CJ-4 oils will be required to be available by October of this year. Some OEMs, such as Cummins and Mack, are likely to launch their low-emission engines requiring API CJ-4 oils ahead of the mandatory requirements.
Chevron has already been selling the new CJ-4 DELO but it cannot display the API starburst until october 1st 2006 so until then it says meets the CJ-4 ULSD specs. the new price reflects the added cost. A gallon went from 7.98 to 9.97 at walmart and is over 10.00 at my local napa.
