I just picked up a 2-ton come-a-long at the home depot for 30 dollars or so, just wondering if its ok use on my bronco if/when I get stuck? I'm not sure of the bronco weight.. 3k lbs? more? Its a 78, what do you guys think? I went back in the woods just to get a feel for how it works and pulled it up a small incline and it did very easily, didn't seem to be under any stress at all, but of course thats not the same as being stuck up to my bumpers in mud..
ehhh, not my first choice but then again if you have no other options then i guess you have no choice. crankin on a come along can get pretty tiring esp if you're stuck. i know you know this but being stuck in mud is way different than just pullin up a hill. persoanlly a hi-lift jack will do you more good. can you take it back and get a 60" hi lift? it does the same thing but you can also use it for a jack as well as a ramp, pry bar, weapon, extra weight in the bed, leg splint, etc etc
78 Bronco weight? Way more than 3000 lbs, over 5000 I'd say. Stuck in mud, a whole lot more than 5000lbs. Go with a Hi-Lift. Me and a buddy of mine pulled his 78 150 (that was just repainted, yeah, yeah I know! He almost shed a tear!) away from a tree on a sidehill that wanted to eat his whole drivers side with one. And that was pulling the front of the truck sideways uphill. They work good, but do take some time to move anything any real distance.
That sounds like fun. A better setup is a Hi-lift jack AND a good winch attached to a solid bumper - after a 2d battery is installed ( with an isolater between the batteries ) that way you can jump start yourself when you forget and leave the lights on. I've done that.
A Bronco weighs more then 4000 pounds, except a Bronco II. I have used a come-along and generally speaking, the frame will wrap under any serious load unless you have a heavy duty one where the frame is 1/4 steel. Never seen one at Home Depot. I bent the handle on my last "HD" one, been debating a year or more if I should straighten out the handle.
I just keep a come-a-long around for pulling cars onto a tow dolly, which is about as real useful it can be when you have a full sized truck.
Well, I was out looking for a hi-lift and came up with a come-a-long. It will have to suffice until I can find one or get a winch. I was just making sure its not overly dangerous to use or anything like that.
Northern Tools stocks High Lifts if you have a local store. I bought my 60" High Lift mail order from them. I think Harbor Freight carries the Farm Hand brand, not sure of the quality, but, them stock them in the Agri magazines too.
Hi-lifts are great, but i found a better alternative. I just keep the entire cast of little people from Willow in my toolbox. They fit into small spaces, and you'd be surprised how much they can move given the right motivation. Here's a pic from one of our latest outings.
