Is the van turbo and ats housing upgrade worth it or would i be better off buying a bb turbo? 400 for ats + 150 for van turbo + 300 to rebuild, after everything you're looking at about 1000 dollars. A bb turbo is around 1500 and from what i read it can take alot more boost than the van/ats combo.
for my truck/van hybrid turbo i have 400 in the exhaust housing (uses stock centersection and turbine), 100 in the exhaust adapter, 100 for the self-rebuild, and shortly will have $405 in the ATS compressor. add $75 for a WW and then $250 for the non-EBPV pedestal and yes, i have about $1330 into my turbo, or so. but the thing is, i know i can run up to 39 pounds of boost (mech has proof) and keep the 1:1 ratio of the boost:drivepressure. the 1.0 housing on the ball bearing turbo won't do that.
Do the ball bearing turbos die easily. Did you mention once they die their dead cause that has a good probability of happining? I heard the bb can handle 60 pounds and would think they would be built stronger and be able to stand up to the abuse and last longer. thanks again for sharing all your knowledge guys

i guess the answer we need to know is what do you want to do with your truck and what mods are you getting?
as far as i can tell you have a ways to go before you need anything bigger.
I have a 5" exhaust, kwik intake, getting my chip from jody any day now, just got valve body from bts, just got 6.0 intercooler from ebay. I'm trying to make power safely. From what i have been reading on here a bigger turbo is one of the next mods that will be best for me. Thanks
A bigger turbo will help you add power safely. The larger exhaust housing will have less back pressure and cause less cylinder pressure for those PMR's.
I still think the van turbo may be your best option for what you've got now. The BB may be able to handle a lot of boost, but will you ever get to that point? Not to say that you can't, but guys running MiniMe's and a BB are only pushing 40 psi or so. And, IMO, that's pushing the effective range of the BB turbo. Sure it can handle it, but you've got to consider the other factors, like surge (which I'm hearing can be pretty bad while towing with the BB) and backpressure.
You might also look into the TN turbo that toyota hauler is using. I've been hearing good things about it lately. But, mech did try it and it didn't work out so well for him...however, he is running some 530 hybrid injectors which will throw out a lot more fuel than stock sticks. So, the TN turbo should work well with stock injectors, or even some minimes'.
Thanks everyone. I guess from what i read it's time to start looking on ebay for a van turbo. Did i read it right that on bean's site his van turbo costs 700.
