Why Would I Need A Tc Lockup ??
#5
Some of the members have made thier own switch. If you do a search you will find what wires to use to do it for a small price. You can't have it locked all the time cause when you are at a stop it will shut the engine off, like in a manual when you don't put the clutch in when you come to a stop.

I used Guzzel92's schematic and directions. Excellant mod to do. I use it all the time now. Here is a link to Guzzels schematic. If you follow the schematic, it's very easy to do. And there is no blinking OD light... I didn't mount mine in a box. The relay is stuck behind the dash and then I used 2 switches. 1 on-off switch and 1 momentary switch. 1 LED for an on indicator. I have a couple pictures in my library.

The switch I wired is just that. A switch. The blinking OD light does not bother me.
When you are getting up to speed and you feel the tranny thump into what feels like another gear, that's the TC locking. With the switch, you can engage that "feeling" at any moment you want - usually after the second gear shift.
It also helps with downshifting to slow the truck - it'll save your service brakes a little wear and tear.
ps. Throw everything out the window about how you think your truck can accelerate.....with the converter locked, it's a whole other beast.

but what is the difference in hitting the od button now and starting off - when you turn the od off does that do something to the tc - thats whats confusing me. and if i had a tc lock up would the accel. be different than if i simply push the od off now the way it is stock?
and is it okay for the truck to use the tc lock to slow down - is that what happens when i turn the od off when slowing down, it feels like the truck gears down?

Forget the OD button for a minute. - all it does is tell the ecm if od is avaliable.
Under hard acceleration (especially if you have a chip/programmer) the converter will lock sooner than the stock program. If you are in OD and you hit the button it does kick down to third gear. This has nothing to do with the tc.
Think of the TC as the clutch in a manual. When it is unlocked, think of it as a clutch let 3/4 of the way out. This is slip. Slip creates gobs of heat. Our truck will engage the tc lock at 30-38 mph depending on the acceleration. So this thing is slipping all day long until you get to a pre-destined speed, then it locks. Almost every vehicle made with an automatic tranny does this.
We are eliminating the bulk of the slippage. Your truck is building a huge amount of power but the slipping TC lets more than 75% of that power out the tailpipe. Would you like to reclaim 75% or better of your power....did I have to ask?
The lock switch is the "pop the clutch" mod. That is 100% of avaliable power to the tranny and whatever wasted through gearing to the rear end, then to the pavement.
Now using the TC to slow the truck. It just uses the drag of the engine to help slow. Now, when you hit the brakes upon slow down, the ecm unlocks the TC and it's all brakes to the stop. The switch also eliminates this from happening.
With my switch in the off position, the transmission acts normally. With it on....i'm in control.
As stated before, if you lock the converter at a stand still the truck will stall.....just like a manual.
